Roadtrip to North Cape

Featured Replies

Hi again guys,

Been a good 2 weeks since I last dropped by, but I reckon my excuse is good enough.. just got back from a 2 week roadtrip with the vRS. Was a nice 4300 kilometer stretch from south-west Finland up north through the whole country and all the way to North Cape and then another way back.

Must say I'm very impressed with this car. I left the rear seats at home and packed up my gear and missus and up we went. The tourque of the 130TD is absolutely brilliant on the mountain roads!

Stats:

4300 kilometers

55,5 hours

76km/h average speed

5.3 litres per 100km average comsuption

Would be easy to shave off a bit on the comsumption by driving like a poofter, but I just couldn't resist...

On the trip itself, it was a bit expensive all together - especially north Norway, but I'll highly recommend it still. Wouldn't think twice to do it again. Scenery is absolutelty brilliant with all snow top mountains and little creeks and waterfalls etc. Not to mention the almost 7km tunnel 212 meters under the sea to reach North Cape. And ofcourse, at this time of the year we've got the midnight sun up there... so sun never sets! Absolutely brilliant.

Btw, ever run across a reindeer in a 3km mountain tunnel? I Have :)

Excellent,

The midnight sun, experinced a mild does while up on Harris (Scotland) last year.

Any guides for a non resident of the area, landing somewhere on a North Sea port?

I always remember my dad saying if you go to Norway pack a trailer of food it will be cheaper overall, I stuggle to believe it's the same 30 years on.

Seen a deer once, leap it's Deer fence to avoid a car, no reindeer though :(

Sorry to say I can't give any definative advice on the ports, but if I were going I'd start from Bergen or Oslo and drive through the whole west coast of Norway. Going to do the trip propably next summer. The scenery is supposed to be even more excellent on the west coast than up north.

As for the prices, Norway is really expensive. A litre of diesel in North Cape was about 1.28 euros per litre, when in Finland (notoriously expensive petrol) it's around 0.95 euros per litre. Also a small cabin in nort Norway in Alta was about 52 euros per 2 persons for 1 night. That was a very basic cabin with heating + stove and fridge. Water you had to carry yourself from a tap about 100 meters from cabin. Still it beats a tent :) So, if you don't mind that level of comfort - you'll be set.

About the reindeers, you'll see plenty in Norway. Up north be prepared to stop every few kilometers or so just cuz the reindeers have taken over the road :))
