Battery dying after fitting new seats

Featured Replies

I fitted new seats from a FL Octavia vrs into my pre-facelift vrs and since then the car has not started three times and needed a jump.

Now here comes the question-

The connector for the airbags on the new seats did not match the ones in my car, so I cut them off and hard-wired the seats to my car (used good quality shrink insulation etc) . I then scanned the motor and all was good but when I came to start it and no go? the battery was showing 11.5v and needed a jump.

Since then its needed a further two jumps, now is there a micro switch in the connector that stops battery drain or is my battery shagged?

Any help gents greatly appreciated.

Chris

One way to be certain would be to disconnect the seat airbags. Fair enough that you'll throw the airbag light as soon as you turn on the ignition but after a few days you'll know if its that or not. If it is, then check that the airbag wire colours are the same between pre facelift and facelift. Then reconnect and clear the airbag fault, and see what happens.

Good answer would suggest that as well to start somewhere

Give the battery a good recharge and if it fails to get above 12.4v then ur battery is probably shot. Good batteries read around 12.5-12.7v and anything below will struggle to start ur car especially when its really cold.

Chris, sorry you are still having problems. I do believe that hard wiring the connection is the official vag fix for intermittent connections in the yellow connectors so I doubt that is the problem. And I am pretty sure my wiring was good.

I reckon the most likely cause is a shot battery. But maybe i would say that! Some battery places will give you a free battery test before they sell you a new one but not sure how sensitive they are.

I guess you can either change the battery or cut the wires to find out more.

Don't worry Dave, you were a star with me that day and your wiring looked top notch   I'm borrowing a charger off a mate today and will take the battery out and charge it over night and then see what I get.

already priced up a Bosch s4 005 type 27 for £60 which didn't think was bad.

P.S still loving the seats

Just stick a multi Meter on current and with everything off etc check for what current drain you have.

Then disconnect the seats and do the current test again if no significant current drain difference look at the battery.

+1 A helper is always handy in this situation, so that you can observe the multimeter whilst disconnecting the seats. I would make getting the battery tested my first port of call though (Just because it is that time of year when weak batteries show their true colours)

Bloody cars eh Chris :(. I have a trickle charger you can leave on the car permanently like whats on the Cossy you can borrow or a proper battery charger if need be mate

Cheers Steve we're good lad.

Having fun with the wife b5 passat as well, it took me 3hrs to change a disc and pads on one wheel, as the there was no pad left and the piston was as far as it could go out and then only 25mins on the other side.

Then the cable in the drivers window mech snapped, so got that to do FFS and I'm at work to top it off when no other bugger is???
