need some advice buying a mk2 octavia vrs

Featured Replies

hi guys, I've currently got a 25th anniversary gti diesel love it but now with a pending extension to the family, I have to let it go :S I've been looking at the vrs. 1) i'm not sure what to get petrol or diesel I've had diesels for 10 years and use to the great mpg i used do 11-12k but now since I've taken up cycling and taking the train the miles have dropped off I've seen that the tax on pet is 250 and derv 170. 2) i'm not sure what to look out for. 3) I've noticed looking through the ad's some 57 plates have a black display (mpg, if a door is open) but then again on 09 plates up why is this? So would be grateful any advice.

thanks

The black display is probably on a car without maxidot, basically a fancy OBC display option. It looks nicer and give you a bit more control over the cars functions. It can be retrofitted but it's a pretty big job.

Petrols can be gotten cheap since the mpg and tax puts people off. If you're doing low mileage you could get a steal. Trade-ins for the petrol are appalling (I know :() so don't pay over the odds at a dealership.

The petrol (TFSI) is arguably the more reliable engine.

thanks for the info ive been scouring the net and trying to get clued up on the car. ive got about 5k to spend and i know it may hard to find one that hasn't been to the moon and back lol

it's probably best to avoid the diesel PD VRS as too many issues relating to DPF and injector recall issues not done properly, best to go the CR VRS if you are after a VRS diesel

when did they start doing the CR engine?

when did they start doing the CR engine?

Around 2009 i think, you wont get a cr vrs for £5k.  There is a cheap vrs on here for sale in the classified section.

ive read up on the dpf problem but didnt know about the injectors so whats the deal about that? and ive read that they wear alot on the rear tyres?

So is this happening on all pd engines or just a curtain year?

no only the pd 170 on the VRS, it does not affect pd 140 as it has different type of injectors and does not have DPF.  The only pd 140 that has a DPF is the Scout and other Pd140s are DPF free

oh right so it seems that you need the grace of god resting his hands on your shoulders to be problem free with the 170's then? so the injector problem happens on 55 - 08's or is it just a curtain year model thats what I should of asked. has anyone got anything good to say about the 170 vrs or are they really that bad??? i've seen one that's had the dpf insides removed and mapped would this give me extra head ache at the mot?

The PD 170 in order to meet Euro 4 compliancy had to be fitted with a DPF or so I believe. VAG literally bolted the tech on with little or no consideration to the regen process reliability and consequently they experienced alot of problems. Also the siemens injectors fitted were problematic and could cause the engine to stop dead at speed which is of course very dangerous. Was so serious VOSA enforced a recall on all 170 PD's (Audi, VW, Skoda the whole 9 yards) and once repaired should not be of concern.

Shame as the 170 PD was a punchy little nugget and probably gave the Mk2 a more fun turn of speed than the CR unit does; the CR is v linear in its delivery with none of that all and nothing power delivery that made the PDs fun. TBF a well looked after PD with the injector recall done, a proper DPF delete (though could become illegal from an MOT standpoint anytime) and a remap would be a fun car to tool around in.

I think you have to take everything with a pinch of salt. I recently got a PD 170 with 124,000 on the clock on a 57 plate , VRS estate. Full service history , everything up to date , great car , quick enough good mpg (50+). Previously I had an RS6 Avant , they are notorious for being money pits but again I scoured for a good example and had no problems (except that 280 miles for £120 didn't go down well with her indoors). So basically look out for a good well maintained example and you should be fine. I paid £5,500 for mine.

ive seen one thats had the dpf removed and remapped would this mean i will have to buy a dpf for the mot or could i get away without it

Bit of a grey area at the moment,if the dpf filter has been removed completley & a straight pipe fitted then yes it will fail,if its had the dpf removed & split & the insides removed then welded back up & re fitted then it should pass(for now anyway) personally i wouldnt get involved with a diesel thats had its dpf removed(that just my opinion).
