I have no power and black smoke

Featured Replies

Recently I replaced the turbo on my fabia vrs. I've covered plenty of miles since replacing it but have recently lost all power I the car.

It still drives well. But appears to not respond and at times gush out black smoke.

Any ideas anyone? Would be much appreciated as I really don't want another car.

I would check all the turbo hoses first.

When they're disturbed with work on the car they can often start to pop off and would cause the symptoms you describe.

Have you checked all the boost pipe unions?

Sounds like its slipping into limp mode from time to time.

Yip, you have a boost leak.  I would guess that a pipe is on and only being held on one side so it's twisting open on boost.  This happened me when a pipe clip broke.

Yeah I was told it was the aluminum pipe which was meant to be 148 before vat ended up getting it for 20. It didn't help unfortunately. Surprisingly they where VW and Audi specialist and just didn't know what the problem was which really irritated me. Thanks for your help though guys. Happy new year

Had a very similar fault after having hybrid turbo fitted and ended up being my air filter! The black smoke and low power was due to the lack of air into the engine and over fueling causing the black smoke and low power. Might be worth a look as I really didn't expect it to be that to be honest. Worth a quick look though.

Thanks a lot olly. It does seem to be something really basic clogged up with oil somewhere or something.

Plugged it into the computer and it came up with a message in regards to the turbo under boosting so going to strip it down and bring back the turbo as it has warranty

Underboost is a boost leak.  Usually nothing to do with the turbo itself.   Save yourself the time and hassle and get the problem properly diagnosed.  A few simple tests can check the MAF, boost pipes, vac and N75 and duty cycle of the actuator.

Have you done an airflow test?

Have you tried driving with the MAF unplugged?

Do you have the exact fault you can post up?

Hi guys. So after various various visits to garages I have had the problem diagnosed. Apparently the acUlator on the turbo is not functioning due to a carbon build up. Turbo has been recently refurbed which is unfortunate however il get it taken off looked at by midlands turbos . With a cost of either 185 - 300. If anyone has any cheaper suggestions if love to hear them. Thanks for your input

Fix for £2 :)

Are they sure it's clogged up?

They usually start to get clogged after 90-100k miles so I'd be surprised if it's had a refurb and is already clogged up.

Phil

what turbo is it running?

Sounds like the refurb place just blagged it or it wasn't refurbed at all because other than replacing the seals, thrust bearing and rebalancing, the main objective of a VNT refurb is to clean the vanes.

Make sure it's not just a busted vac pipe or N75 valve before you rip the turbo out.  2 minutes work with a vac tester will confirm if it's stuck or not.  It'll also confirm if the diaphragm in the Actuator is working.  Every garage has one but it would appear none of the ones you've been at tried it.

And another thing, if any one of the garages you'd taken it to had known how to use their diagnostic equipment they would have checked the map duty cycle to see if the VNT was moving or was out of range.

I've cleaned out turbos for people.  A couple of hours work is all it takes.

No offense to the mr muscle believers but in a lot of cases it doesn't work or is only a quick fix.  Cleaning a VNT mechanism isn't actually that hard.
