Turbo problems 2005 2.0 estate

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm new to bri skoda but was recommended by a friend.

I recently sold my audi a3 and bought a 2005 skoda octavia 2.0 tdi estate l&k with 124k on it. It's got a dsg box.

On the way home I popped it in sport mode and put my foot down and at around 80mph at high revs the engine lost power and went into safe mode. I pulled up and knocked engine off and started again and all was good again. The car has done the same thing around 6 times since I have had it always under heavy load at speed and high revs.

Am I right in thinking this will be a turbo problem, I've read articles and people suggesting sticky veins on turbo and have told of using innotec turbo cleaner to solve problem. I don't have the £800 to replace the turbo and don't have the knowledge to consider replacing myself.

Anyone have any views on the fault and success rates of innotec, I'm no mechanic and would have to get garage to try the innotec turbo cleaner but don't want to bother if it won't solve the problem seems to be a waste of money.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Pete

Pete the symptoms you describe are classic turbo sticky vanes, Although I could not confirm this until I have seen a VCDS scan. I have used the innotec kit before with good results. I have also used other products such as in tank cleaners and cleaners you spray into the engine - both of these have given mixed results.

Thanks for quick response, may be worth giving the innotec a try, will most garages do this as I would have a clue where to start in doing it! It's also due a service so I'll try and get them to test turbo

Most decent garages would conduct this for you so long as you supply the kit and tell them what you want them to do.

This thread is worth a read

In order for them to test the turbo, they will first need to do a scan and confirm that the overboost fault code is registered and your fault if not down to something else, I doubt it is with the symptoms you describe but you never know.

Having the vehicle serviced is a good place to start. I would proceed in the following order

1. Scan car / confirm fault code.

2. If overboost - use Innotec kit to clean turbo.

3. Confirm fault has gone away (spirited test drive ie full throttle in 2nd & third gear preferably going up hill. If car does not go back into limp home mode then fault has been rectified.)  Clear faults from ECU memory.

4. Have car serviced.

5. Enjoy driving car once more.

Hope this helps.

Just wanted to update with results so far,

Got car scanned foc and confirmed fault also tested actuator which is couldn't move.

I whipped exhaust off and applied innotec turbo cleaner, put around 25% in at first and after around 5 mins actuator started to move, I left it for around 20 mins before trying actuator again much flower so applied rest of can of turbo cleaner, eventually it began to seep out of joints. After just over hour and numerous movements of actuator I removed blanks plate and residue of turbo cleaner came out which was very very dirty so hoped it had done its job.

Refitted car and put injector cleaner in filer, made a bit of a mess here as it overflowed never mind.

Let car warm up on drive then drove car steady for around 10 miles then I floored it in sport mode upto a high speed with no problems at all.

Although early days looks like it may have done the trick. Just need to get car serviced on my next day off and hopefully I'm back on the road with no problems

Thanks again

You're welcome. Happy motoring.
