Am i being paranoid?

Featured Replies

Hi, I think i have a few things wrong with my car but not sure if i'm being an idiot.

The first is that when i start the car it sounds like a diesel, i've had a few friends say the same thing so not sure what that's about ha!

Second is that there always seems to be some sort of smoke/steam coming out of the exhausts, even when the engine is fully warmed up. I'm sitting in traffic and everyone else is fine and i look in the mirror and notice the smoke randomly coming out.

Lastly i have noticed when i put the foot down it sounds like the exhaust is raspy, is this normal being the vRS?

Mine smokes or steams a lot also, it always has, upon start up i cant say Ive noticed it sounding like a diesel, its louder when cold but certainly not diesel sounding.

As for the exhaust again mine sounds like it spitting at you but its done this in the 3 years Ive owned it, so i assume this is normal considering its fully serviced by skoda and has never failed an MOT for anything else than wiper blades.

I have the TFSI, however thought I'd comment.

Mine sounds a bit like a diesel on start, if you Google TSI sounds like diesel there seem to be plenty of results.

Exhaust wise, mine seems the same... I also observed this when I had the MK1 vRS, it never caused any issues and I don't believe it's a problem. My exhaust seems a bit louder since I replaced my tyres and I guess you could describe it as raspy too.

If in doubt, you could always record a video and upload it to Youtube for us to listen to.

Once when I had a cat' converter beginning to fail it made a lot of raspy noises.

Probably paranoid.

1) I've a TFSI and it sounds like a quiet diesel when starting. DI petrols do not sound pleasant.

2) Burning petrol actually makes quite a bit of water. If the temp and humidity are right you'll get quite a bit of steam out the back of the car. Diesels produce less water, it's one of the reasons diesel exhausts last longer.

3) Raspy, not sure on that. The TFSI makes an attempt a sporty noise when you floor it but I doubt I'd call it raspy.

Exhaust vapour noticeable in cold weather ? Try running heater temp in mid range and without fans blowing , then have another look !
