Would a duff engine mount cause..

Featured Replies

...a rattle over bumps in the road? I'm trying to trace a loud rattle coming from the front-left-hand side. It occurs over bumps/potholes/impefections and there's a distinct clunk on moderate acceleration. Has no impact on the steering - car doesn't veer on braking or acceleration.

Checked for play in the console bushes, checked for obvious loose/damaged components, checked for horizontal/vertical play at the left hand wheel and all seem fine.

Tested the engine mounts by rocking engine back and forth using a bar. Left hand gearbox mount looks a bit tired (little bit of rubber loose) and it produced a very quiet 'tap' noise on movement.

Do you think the engine mount could be responsible for such a loud rattle or should I continue looking? Will replace it anyway, but it would be good to solve the rattle problem in one hit, so other suggestions/suggested checks welcome. Console bushes are 3 years old. Worth replacing them just in case?

Cheers,

Tass

Did you check the spring itself isn't broken?

I haven't, though I would have thought that would affect the ride height and handling?

Will check tomorrow morn in case.

Cheers.

Possibly, but remember reading about an Octavia vRS with similar issues which turned out to be a spring, s thought it was worth a check :)

I'll let you know when I manage to locate it!

Yep, duff engine mount was contributing to the knocks on mine.  Although I did have to change the mounts on bother sides, a console bush, both ball joints, a track rod end, and the droplinks to get rid of them all.

Im tempted to replace all mine as its on 105k miles!

I'm on 150K mate and mine were completely shafted.
