TDi CR110 to CR140?

Featured Replies

(With particular regard to the Yeti if it makes any difference)

I've read that the only difference between the CR110 and CR140 engines is the map.

If that's the case, could I fit the ECU from a written off CR140 to my CR110 engine?

I'm thinking that I'd like a little more go, but would like the opportunity to revert to stock if insurance cover became trickier (on the basis that once an ECU has been unlocked, it can not be put fully back to stock again i.e. re-encrypted)

And as a supplimentary, would there be any difference between a Yeti CR140 ecu, or an Octavia one, or a Golf one, or, or...

i.e..do all the VAG cars at the same output run the same map?

Maybe a tuning box would be easier if you want it removable?

You'll also get more than 140.

But yes, as you say the 110 and 140 are mechanically the same.

Not heard of anyone swapping an ECU before though.

Not entirely sure why, but I've never fancied puting on a tuning box, prefering the idea of a "proper remap" instead. Of course, if tuning boxes are now sufficiently good to allow the engine to operate exactly like a remap (with fueling, boost etc) then maybe I should think again.

I did wonder if simply bolting on a 140 ECU might be simple and effective way of achieving a moderate boost (though I've no idea how much used ECUs cost these days)

Hi Gyp,

Just seen your post from a couple of weeks ago.

Your Yeti 2.0 TDI 110 has a Bosch EDC17 Tri-core ECU which will require you to have the ECU removed and opened.  That’s no problem, it’s easy but will be time-consuming, expensive and is not adjustable.  Switching the ECU is not as simple as it may sound.  Your engine immobiliser, keys and stereo etc are canbus driven and are encrypted with a unique ID which is programmed for security purposes to suit your exact vehicle only.  Buying the replacement ECU in the first place will be expensive.  You can have a replacement ECU reprogrammed to suit your, immobiliser, keys and stereo etc but this is costly and will leave you with an ECU unique to your vehicle when you sell your Yeti in the future.

We cover all methods of tuning and can provide a custom remap or a digital multi-channel tuning system for your Yeti.  However, with the implications and costs relating to remapping your ECU, we would recommend our multi-channel system such as our CRTD2® TWIN Channel tuning system which will offer you all the benefits of a remap and the ability to select alternative maps.  Our tuning boxes are custom programmed to meet your specific requirements.  The system can be installed and removed easily and is traceless.  It can also be reprogrammed for future vehicles for minimal cost.  We have a lot of experience with the 2.0 TDI 110 as the same engine is also used in the Passat, Golf and Tiguan etc, etc, etc.  One of our demonstrator vehicles is also a VAG 2.0 TDI Common Rail.

If it’s convenient for you, you are welcome to come in for a chat, a coffee and free trial of one of systems. Give us a call if you have any questions - 01245 924 401.  Always happy to be of help.

Regards,

Steve

Steve, thanks for the thorough response, and having looked at, a tuning box does on the face of it appear preferable to a remap these days.

Things have changed a little since I originally asked the question, and I've found myself renewing my insurance with an insurer that will not cover the modification, so plans for upgrades are on hold at the moment.

Thanks again

No problem Gyp.  If you have any general questions regarding tuning in the future, then please feel free to give us a call  - 01245 924 401.

Regards,

Steve
