Broken headlight.

Featured Replies

I had my car serviced yesterday for right-xenon lamp had gone out, the workshop said that the light was good but the controller was broken due to moisture in the headlight. They wanted 7692 sek (719.5 pounds) for a new lamp, including installation. I thought it was extremely expensive so I said I fix this myself.

So now to my question:

If I buy an used headlight eg at ebay.com, is the controller unit inside the headlight so that it is only to change headlight or do I need to buy more stuff?

Moisture in the headlight?

Is the headlight cracked or damaged? The headlight has a breather hole in it to allow any moisture to escape.

The very fact the headlight has a breather hole in it is an acceptance that moisture is likley to enter the headlight. Therefore the part that has failed should be protected against the side effects of being exposed to any moisture.

I'd be arguing with the garage that any excess moisture in the headlight is due to a manufacturing defect and that Skoda should be paying, or at least contributing, towards the cost of repair.

Buying a new headlight off eBay is unlikely to get you the parts you need. The bi-xenon headlights on the MkII Superb are quite complex and include various different electrical components to make them work. These include the ballasts, ignitors, bulbs, controllers and motors needed for the turning and self-levelling functions. If you are buying a headlight it will likely not include all of these extra and expensive components as they are often broken down and sold individually.

As I've mentioned above, unless the headlight has been damaged in an accident I'd expect a headlight (excluding the bulbs) to last the life of the car.

Can you not speak / complain to Skoda directly?

I thought they were sealed units, apart from the rubber bung plug on the back? Otherwise a breather hole will surely let moisture in as you turn the headlight off, and cool moist air enters the housing which will just then condense when you next turn the headlight on again. And then you have condensate in the housing forever.

It's outside mounted at the bottom of the lamps.

If You are interested I have one used set to sell.

Just PM me.

The headlight is not broken or cracked in any way, just a lot of water in it. I removed on of the rubber lids yeasterday and today almost all of the water was gone but the headlight did still not work. I think that the "breader hole" don't work. Where is it located?

So I hooked upp the car to a computer with VCDS today and read the fault codes and this is what it said:

Hi Rubby!

Two short questions, how old is the car and what is its mileage?

Have a nice day!
