Towbar electrics... it was working.. then I trashed the trailer :(

Featured Replies

Not posted for a while, so hello again! My Yeti had the proper factory fitted tow bar and coding and it's been trouble free for 18 months. Then I backed into my wife's car while the bike trailer was hooked up. Oops. Totally trashed all the lights on the trailer so I assume this caused some fuse based trauma in the car electrics.

I had some LED replacements for the trailer, wired them all up and now have

1) one side number plate and indicator working

2) no brakes lights

3) nothing on the other side

4) with engine off, the lights flash at intervals as if they are resetting themselves. I've removed the trailer so I don't flatten the battery.

I've read many threads and am still pretty confused about the whole canbus system but have a few simple questions I hope you can help me with

1) are there separate fuses for left and right hand side of trailer electrics

2) where are they! In the dash, I found reference for three trailer fuses, only one was populated and it was absolutely fine

3) Now I have LED lights, is the resistance too low to activate the canbus system (I don't think so as I get all the warnings on the dash telling me what's not working on the trailer and the reversing sensors are disabled)

I will try another trailer on my electrics tomorrow to see if I can narrow down if the fault is the new lights (or my wiring!) or something on the Yeti. Any advice in the meantime would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Does the car rear fog light come on? If so the trailer isn't detected.

LED lights in the trailer will potentially confuse things and probably lead to the bulb failure light coming on. Until you have sorted everything out use "normal" bulbs.

If you clouted it hard enough to break the lights I would be checking the wiring ALL the way through the trailer and in the car sockets, male and female halves.

Too dark and a glass of wine so I can't check my fuses, sorry. They will be in the inside fuse box.

Another trailer to test them sounds like a good idea.

Good Q. Rear fog activation doesn't light up the Yeti Fog but it does light up the fog and reversing light on the trailer. So it's not a fuse issue, it's a wiring one. I took a flyer on the LED light cables being the same colour code as the ones off the trailer wiring harness. Looks like I'll need to do some work with the multimeter.

Tried reversing as well, no bells so CANBUS is definitely aware of trailer. Right tomorrow we'll see what can be done.

^^ in terms of trying it with bulbs. Will do that tomorrow when I have access to a friend's trailer. Shall report back in case anyone else has this kind of problem. It took most of the day to make up new brackets etc to fix the carnage of the accident. I was naive enough to assume the electrics would be simple. Until I googled CANBUS ;)

According to my notes, the loom from the Trailer Control Unit to the socket has different colours. see below

Pin 1 = Left Indicator, black/white -> pin 7

Pin 2 = Fog, grey/white -> pin 2

Pin 3 = Earth, brown -> EARTH POINT

Pin 4 = Right Indicator, black/green -> pin 5

Pin 5 = Right Tail, grey/red -> pin 4

Pin 6 = Brake, black/red -> pin 13

Pin 7 = Left Tail, grey/black -> pin 10

Pin 8 = Reverse, black/blue -> pin 3

Pin 9 = Unswitched 12V, red -> pin 16

Pin 13 = Earth, brown -> EARTH POINT (larger wire)

LHS is the trailer socket, RHS is the control unit.

In addition to this loom you may have a switched 12V to pin 10 and another earth wire to pin 11.

'Too dark' = yes, fuse box good place to start looking.  'Glass of wine' = canshel las' comment.  :cocktail: :zzz:

Thanks all, will let you know how I get on.... convinced myself it's a wiring problem. That CANBUS stuff is quite complicated when you get into it.

Def too dark; we don't have street lamps!!...

What's a street lamp?  :wonder: :giggle:

What's a street lamp?  :wonder: :giggle:

We have one opposite the house, saves on electric at night!! :giggle:

Shouldn't be a wiring problem with the car, I would make sure that the wires are plugged into the correct pins, the wires wont have changed but maybe there Is a control module that was frazzled when the lights popped.

Ooh, nasty. Roofbox (the uk importer) should be able to sort you out with replacement lenses for your strada. Just be aware of the fact that the early ones had the fog on the left hand side and the newer ones are on the right (with the reversing lamp on the left).

Edit: actually on reflection, that looks properly FUBAR'd as the slide/tilt release lever is mangled. Insurance?

Edit2: Just read your blog post. Oh dear. :think:

I had some LEDs for another project so they got fitted. I don't think it's a car problem. We just need to work through the pins on the connector to match it up with the lights.  If all else fails, I'll get some new ones from roofbox. Not had time for a play yet but amazingly the trailer isn't bent - well not bent enough that the slide/tilt still works, and we've made up new plates/bodged it onto the remains of the brackets so hopeful it'll be raised from the swarf!
