Battery replacement

Featured Replies

The battery in my 07 1.9tdi Octy has just died completely. It was fine yesterday, now it has been on charge all day and still won't operate the starter. We need the car to transport someone every day, and I've had to borrow my son's antique Fiesta because the Octy is blocking in the Disco.

It's Sunday, cold, and serious rain is threatened tomorrow. I replaced the Disco battery from an online supplier last time and could get a Varta for £68. Is this a decent price and would a local factor be competitive if they had one in stock? That would save a day.

Using a torch, there just appears to be one bolt and clip in the bowels of the engine compartment holding the battery down. Is it an easy job to get this in and out? Will I have to move any other bits & pieces to do the change?

Any other gotchas? I have read things about the throttle having to be recalibrated etc.

So many questions for such a (hopefully) simple job.

I have just fitted a Bosch S5 to mine from carparts4less which was £78.99 with their current discount code. Just the terminal connections and that bolt that you have already found. 12mm I think?? Maybe 10mm for the terminals.

After disconnecting I got a esp fault on the maxidot but as soon as the wheels started turning it disappeared. Abs sensor thing I think. Other than that you just have to reset the time.

One more thing is that the original battery cover/bag was too small for the Bosch S5 so mine is cover less. Some terminal covers might be handy to fit whilst you are doing the job.

Thanks, that's all very reassuring. I'll try the one decent local motor factor that I know of tomorrow, and then probably have to order online.

It was a place called Battery Megastore I used last time and the Varta battery has been fine in the Disco, so I'll probably go with them again.

My battery cover is sort of a plastic sleeve with a clip on top. If it doesn't fit, I can always bodge a cover for the terminals.

Justcarbatteries is where I got my Bosch 096 S5. £80 delivered. Fantastic starting power - 780a CCA.

I just bought a Varta Silver Dynamic p/no 577400078 E44 (DIN66 RHP tall with side ledges).  780CCA 77Ah.  It was AUD250 (GBP137) which is cheap for down here & shows how good you Pommies have got it.  Even the badly made local batteries with 580CCA are AUD 170.

You'll need a 10mm spanner for the terminals & a 13mm socket with 250mm extension for the clamp bolt.

Another vote here for the Bosch S5. A very good battery, although not the cheapest.

Something to bear in mind is that Bosch Silver and Varta Silver are exactly the same battery, just with different labels on. They both have a five year warranty so I would go for whichever of the two you can find cheapest.

Well, I went with the Varta with a 4 year warranty, but bought it from a local family owned motor factor. I had to beat them down, but they came close enough to the online price, and I got the job done in the small window of sunshine we had yesterday.

I would have posted this sooner but I've spent the day chasing round and giving lifts because my son in law's Focus suddenly had completely dead electrics, tripped the cutouts on my 2 chargers and defeated a local garage who tried 3 different starter/jump lead options. The recovery people are on their way. What a stupid place to put a battery on the Focus - half under the windscreen bottom metal area. His second day in a new job, so not good timing.

Thanks for all the replies, especially the ones giving the socket sizes needed.

My daughter is convinced we have Martians beaming rays down with the 2 dead batteries in 2 days.
