Steel Spare Wheel?

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have just realised that I have a steel wheel as spare. It does not have a yellow band on it saying use under a certain speed! But the main question is if I have to use it, will it just go on as a replacement to the alloy's that are on the car with the alloy bolts? Because I have not got any other bolts.

its not a space saver so isnt limited. You dont need to worry about bolts, all is the same

I got a space saver!

It might be a different size to your normal wheels. If it is then you're limited to 50mph.

The VRS has 225 alloys and a 195 steel spare.

Mine with the sticker stating max speed limit...

If it's the correct type of spare wheel then it should go on with the existing bolts, I have a steel spare and it just swaps straight over.

I know the full size spare which comes with the VRS is labelled as being limited to 50mph/80kmh because it's a 16in wheel and the standard alloys are 17 or 18in but would this mean on a car with 16in alloys that the steel would not have the limit?

For reference, this is what my spare looks like:

No same size. The wheel does not look special at all, no notice's on it like Chan110. Just an ordinary steel wheel.

But was not sure if it needed different bolts to alloy's

I would have thought if ORIGINAL spare,

it does NOT matter if full size or space saver,

it will fit existing bolts.

(Unless spare is NOT original).

The yellow sticker with max speed limit probably apply to one of 2 scenarios:

1. Its a space saver - hence shouldnt be driving faster than 50.

2. The full size spare is a DIFFERENT size to existing wheels.

My 2pence.

My bolts for 18" alloys fitted the 16" steel spare :-)

No current Skoda models are fitted with a 'space saver'.

The steel spare wheels are full size even though they may not match the standard alloy diameter. This is the only reason for the speed restriction.

Space saver...

Full size steel spare (MkII Octavia vRS)...

Oh

Matilda's spare has the sticker but has a 6.5J steel and the same tyre (205/60/15) as the alloys have fitted. I presume they expected the car to have larger 'standard' wheels fitted.

The largest available alloy wheel is 18" (standard/factory order) but they have a low profile tyre.

Hence the rolling circumference of the 16" spare (with its higher profile tyre) is the same as the larger 17" and 18" alloys.
