Suspension questions and coilovers (I hate Mondays)

Featured Replies

Well Monday got off to a good start snapped coil spring as the missus set off to work :swear: So as I didn't start work till lunch time i removed the N/S/F strut and broken spring, only to find the shock is fubar pushes in quite easily and stays there  :wall:

So quick check on ECP site found these  http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Skoda_Octavia_1.8_2004/p/car-parts/suspension-and-steering/suspension/lowering-spring/?974440965&1&78ca31bd1b35aa395b23fe96b60485a016974765&000559 at slightly more than 1 standard spring. I know their cheap but this wasn't a planed upgrade so beggars and all that. Enquired at EPC about shocks they had rears in but don't supply fronts found this odd. However all was revealed after I ordered a full set of shocks from Unipart and when I went to collect them found there's no bracket for the ARB link to connect to  :wall: They tried 4 different manufactures all listed the same part so after a full refund we determined that Dealer, Bilstien or Koni where the only options. Cut a long story short I've ordered these http://www.dpmperformance.co.uk/fk-ak-street-coilover-suspension-kitbr-octavia-1u-rs-18t-0698-p-9786.html tonight from dpm hopefully they'll be in stock coz missus is doing my head in about having the car off the road and Wednesday is my next day off so I'll be fitting them. Anyone got any tips on fitting/setting up on these never had coilovers before so quite excited.

OK so no one running these well looks like I'll be the tester for these then anyone got tips for setting up coilovers on the vRS not looking for super low's as its a daily driver.

Let me know how these go as I am looking at getting a set for my octy

Loads of the v6 golf boys run these and get really good reviews for the price, as for setting them up I usually go for just under half way down on the fronts, rears all the way down on adjusters, then ride around the block come back and adjust to suit again,

Cheers Trevor I'll set them like that and take some pics. Will review them after they've been on for a while. Just out of interest is there any reason why I couldn't fit a mk4 golf kit and then use golf drop links attached at the bottom arm???

I've got a set but with current clutch gearbox issues are yet to be fitted.

They did however have to come direct from Germany when I ordered them as they didn't have the vrs version in ul stick at the time.

May be different at present but just incase you may have a few days wait before they arrive.

Damian is very very helpful though and cant complain with his service at all.

My brother in law to be runs the same on his golf and speaks so highly of them which is why I went that route.

I have the FK AK streets.

Awesome for the money mine are 6 coils off the bottom on the front and the drivshaft clips on large bumps, rears are now 6 coils up and it rubs like hell with 2 people in the back.

going 12 coils front, and 16 on the back.

When my prosports were fitted Steve (the mechanic) and myself set everything at halveseys and then drove it to settle then adjusted to taste....

I'm now nearly all the way down at the front but still nr the halfway at the back..... But I do like the rake........ See how you go buddy but that my advice :)

Don't wanna have it rubbing VRade as it's a daily driver and often has 4-5 people in so will set it halfway and see from there. Same here Craig85 there coming straight from FK in Germany, luckily I've borrowed my Dads Ibiza (1.0 numb as f*&k but beats walking :giggle: ) I will have to wait till they arrive then fit them over a few nights after work :wall: Thanks Sysvrs I do like the standard rake and defo don't want a saggy back end.

They don't take too long in all honesty, won't be waiting for ages. At least you have something to fall back on though whilst the octys off the road. I've just inherited my mum and dads supercharged Mercedes to use whilst waiting for mine to get fixed. In fairness I'm not in so much of a rush to get it done now as the merc is just awesome.. Proving to give some grins all round at present :D

S/C merc nice, beats my 3 cylinder Ibiza  :envy: What's the latest with the G'box/clutch issues

It's certainly making me grin. It's the more family friendly out of their cars as the others a Saab convertible turbo, goes so nicely but only 2 doors and rear seats don't fit our babyseat for my daughter.

Anyway, main thing is I'm trying to source a oem conversion kit at a reasonable cost and the tps branch that's nearest to me isn't really much cheaper than going Vw direct at present.

Gearbox wise not sure if I have a little sign of diff whine but won't know until it's out and looked and and or back together. Doesn't look like the gearbox oil has ever been changed so hoping could be crappy old oil not helping as can't afford a lsd upgrade at present so just taking my time and getting bits sorted as and when can get them.

Helps having the Mercedes to use despite its colossal fuel bill lol :)

Very interested in your thoughts and review buddy might just have a set of these myself!

Another question, will spacers be required for this set up?

  • Author

Not sure on the spacers adfro depends how low you go. Suspect someone will no better than me.

The feeling on here Craig85 is vr6 clutch and g60 flywheel conversion. I'd be tempted to put the old box in with fresh oil and seals. How bad was the whine.

That's the route I'm getting prices for in honesty.

Just can't find it as cheap as others have said.

It wasn't a terrible whine in honesty, more noticeable between 40-60 and either side of that its harder to hear and at 70 or thereabouts you can't really tell anymore.

When you says seals are we talking bearing or diff as never done any internal gearbox replacements or work before.?

  • Author

Yeah I'd live with the whine plus with fresh oil it maybe ok. The seals I would replace are driveshaft ones as they're cheap and might aswell while the box is out.

Ah shaft seals, didn't think about those.

Will take that onboard and get them done as you say.

Just need to get hold of the clutch first :)

Good luck with the clutch bud that's the only thing that hasn't died on mine recently (tempting fate here) :whew:

Thanks for that mate, it's one of a list of things on mine at present :(

Sorry that this has taken away a bit from your initial post regarding the coil overs. Hope that when you get them fitted it all works out, keen to hear what they're like as I bet you'll have them fitted before I get mine done :)

No probs Craig85, I've spent most of today replacing the front drop links on the old man's Ibiza and sorting out the rear washer not working, may get the O/S/F strut  off tomorrow after work weather permitting.  :rain:

Ah well yeah fingers crossed for tomorrow then hey. Only going to do a few under bonnet little additions whilst the cars not really mobile so as long as it doesn't pour down shouldn't be too bad.

I'm sure it'll be doable for you though :)

Got the O/S/F strut off and stripped also got the bottom arm poly bushed 16h22dj.jpg

Even better news is my FK's have landed at east midlands airport so shouldn't be long.

I have a question about the suspension of my 2002 VRS 1.8 20v AUQ Mk1

Recently i bought new Front suspension system for my vrs.

I could not afford the original parts which was far too expensive to my pocket. so i decide the best aftermarket /similar parts as i could find.

I changed the springs to lesjofors and dampers to KYB (kayaba)., and other things too like tower block bearing etc.

My question is that the car now is a bit higher , so i have aprox 3cm more space between the top of the tyre and the front fender arc, and can be possible or it is normal that the car is gets higher after suspension renew ?? or the damper could be for other model or taller ???

My mechanic said that it is because there is (sorry i dont know exactly the name ) some rubber blocker or  what and that was weared after many years. so after changed to new one could be the rise of the car front.

There is someone of you who have the same mk1 vrs with original suspension ? maybe can someone measure the lenght from the wheelbase to fender arc ... could be usefull

Any suggestion is welcome

Thanx in advance
