Problem with nasty noise, metal on metal

I have recently experienced an awful noise, metal on metal when starting my Skoda Yeti

 

Recently when starting up as the gear engages it as if there is no lubrication in gearbox?

 

It is worse when cold and doesn't happen when going up the gears - only experiencing it in first gear or reversing. The sound doesn't appear when putting in the gear it comes when I releaing the clutch and letting the car start off either on 1st gear or in reverse.
 
If I have my trailer hooked on it sounds even worse since the car has to work more to move.
 
I have been talking to my Skoda workshop of this, left it there for investigation and they can't find out what is wrong, at first they ddn't even hear it so I had to take them for a ride in my car showing them how and when this awful noise appears. I can't find any stones stuck in the brakes or any other reasons for this noise.
 
I recently in this process had to change the waterpump that broke down and leaked coolerfluid. I have had the Yeti since it was new, june 2010, without any problems until this annoying noice that drives me crazy, it kind of sound like when you brake woth no brakepads left, metal on metal. The cars has been going for almost 8000 km and serviced according to serviceplan. It is an 1,8 TSI 4X4 experience. 
 
Any ideas would be gratefully received. The less expensive the better!!!

I wonder if this might be the clutch release bearing?

Just occasionaly my 1.8TSi 4x4 emits a short "screech" just as the clutch starts to take up the drive in first (or reverse) gear, and the greater the load, the more likely it is to do it. My car is out of warranty (though I don't think the warranty would cover this fault anyway) so I'm prepared to put up with it as it's probably not doing any harm (other than to my ears!).

It might not get any worse for another 80k - 100k or even longer so I don't see the point of taking it all to bits unless something else needs doing at the same time.

Have you considered the auxiliary drive belt?

My last A4 used to do that and it sounded just like a metal to metal but turned out to be a loose belt.

Mine has done this on and off for a couple of years. I'm led to believe its the pressure plate and spring assembly, resonating at the bite point. Only way to cure it is to replace clutch apparently. You may find it does not happen if you let the clutch out more gently or more harshly as you miss that 'sweet spot' that allows this 'shudder' of the plate at this annoying frequency. Apparently apart from the noise there is nothing to worry about and the clutch should last a 'normal lifetime'. I found this problem on other car forums from 'low cost' cars, right up to the 'BIG bucks' bracket. There is a theory that it's caused by the modern clutch plate material used today as the old asbestos formula is now banned. If it's any consolation mine is also a 1.8 TSI 4x4 and I no longer bother about it.

I'm not an expert mind, so someone may come up with a another 'theory', but it has baffled the Skoda mechanics as well as everyone else! Hope this is of some use to you. Regards Dave

Just a thought, and not sure if the Yeti has one, but in my previous life (in the motor trade) we used to get problems with dual mass flywheels making a god awful noise when they were worn.

Duel mass flywheels are on diesels to the best of my knowledge, not petrol which are the cars in question though. Also the noise only happens in first or reverse. (basically moving off). Hence my 'theory' for the noise. What do you think Andy? Ideas? Like I said even Skoda mechanics have been puzzled and often cannot replicate the noise in the garage. It's a b*gg*r!

Just had a look at manual and you are right about the clutch system being DMF Kenny. Oh dear! Hope I'm right about the clutch lasting though or it's going to be an expensive future!

Been looking around the net for anything on dual mass flywheel failure. The 'consensus of opinion' from the petrol head fraternity suggests that you would get a knocking or clattering noise at tick over, start up and even at low cruising speeds. I don't get any of that on mine. Neither do I get judder at low revs that is suggested by most posters. They also say it gets noisier if you dip the clutch at tick over.

I must admit, I'm still not sure about all this as mine is smooth and quiet except at clutch bite point as I initially move off. Doesn't give any other 'symptoms'. Will keep looking!  :think:          

Had mine looked at today. Not the DMF, so happy and will put up with squeak, which stopped on it's own yesterday! Quiet clutch bite now.(till next time of course!) Sods Law!
