DSG Mechatronics Cover

Featured Replies

Looking for a little advice please :)

When getting the MOT done recently I was advised that the DSG mechatronics cover was corroded - picture attached. There aren't any problems with the mechatronics unit itself (touch wood).

Does this cover just offer protection of the mechatronics unit (e.g. from water, stone chips, etc.), or is it a sealed unit containing oil itself? I guess I'm wondering how badly it needs replacing?

Any advice much appreciated.

Does look a little shabby, not sure what is in there but I would be tempted to remove it and give it a clean up and some paint, good quality anti rust paint. Get some new screws too, stainless ones from Bentleys.

Thanks James.

Wasn't sure about taking it off without knowing what's inside (in case it's full of oil or maybe I'd need to order a replacement gasket or something). Stainless screws sound like a good bet though, thanks for the link.

I would just proceed with caution as I have never took one apart!   Held together by screws though, I really can't see it being full of oil or spring loaded bits, just a cover for whatever.

DON'T It's full of oil.......

Think of it as a sideways sump. You will need to empty the gearbox first before doing anything with it.

I am glad you posted Legend, pug_leg, scratch my idea of having a look see, wait until you service the car and do it then.

James I - Have a search on Google ref DSG oil change, because if you are removing the oil there are some good youtube clips telling you how to refill it and you might as well change the DSG oil filter at the same time.

Will do Radders, thanks for the heads up.

3.30 into the video you can see the side sump, great call to look for a video on it!

Lots of useful info above, thanks all. I'll wait for some better weather and take a closer look.

You're welcome.

A good Rust treatment is hydrate 80 by bilt-hamber then POR 15 chassis black will probably see you out before it needs doing again and won't chip or let in condensation like powder coating
