I always fill my Smart diesel when the gauge is just under half full,and i have done 300 miles.It takes 5 galls to fill,so thats 60 MPG all round town work.

 

        When i make the odd longer trip,eg Manchester to Blackpool  100 mile round trip, i get 80 MPG.

 

             They say you can get 600 miles from a tank,but i would not risk it. Even if i did Manchester to London return it would only be 400 miles,so why bother.Then again i would not drive to London when i can get the train for only £20 return booking well in advance with my railcard,and it only takes 2 hours.

Had to refill as expected, 438.6 miles from filling up, 31.94 litres to refill, so around 62.4mpg I make that.

Now I'm no longer putting high octane fuel in my car I don't really stick to one brand anymore, but usually choose a garage rather than supermarkets - but that's only cos I hate supermarkets in general and they're always chockablock. I mean, with the Citigo's frugality you're only talking a £1 or £2 difference, and petrol prices are generally coming down now at least in my area. A tankful costs me about £42 at the moment, from about £46 when I got the car back in July. How much of that is due to volume expansion in cold or warm weather I do not know.

 

I average about 400 miles to a tank - at least on the PID. That is a daily working week commute of NSL single track roads and a big chunk of dual carriageway. There are something like 3 sets of lights on my journey, with generally light traffic. In dry weather I can get 64mpg on the way in to work but never more than 55mpg on the way back. I usually sit at 60ish on the dual carriageway and take it easy unless I feel I'm holding people up. If it's raining then the mpg drops off considerably.

Mileage/mpg depends, I've found, mostly on subtle elevation differences. I observed significant differences in mpg between journeys to & from work - this tool confirmed my elevation/gradient suspicions: http://www.doogal.co.uk/RouteElevation.php - it plots a specified route on a graph.

Is it common practice to continue driving until the tank is nearly empty?  No matter what car I've owned, it's tank size or mpg....I've always filled up at about the "one- quarter mark". Not sure of the point of waiting any longer?

I would have thought that overall the point would be less trips to the petrol station

I jave started to do that and surprisingly I am getting higher MPGs..
