Source for reliable G9 Halogen Capsule Bulbs

Featured Replies

We have a number of light fittings in the house that use G9 capsule bulbs and the ones which I had got from B&Q are proving to be pretty naff and blowing fairly quickly.  While I can get them from various places on the high street I am wondering if it is worthwhile going via an online seller for a bulk deal as I have 12 fitted currently and don't expect them to last out the next few months!

Anyone know of a decent online seller of domestic bulbs?

Maplin do led G9 bulbs, about £7 each though.

Thanks, I was thinking about swapping to LEDs as they may last longer and so justify the higher cost (as well as the reduced power consumption).  However I need to be careful of the fitting size as they sit in a glass cylinder which needs a special extraction tool to undo so have to make sure they will fit.

Also want to make sure that the wattage is appropriate as it took us a few attempts to get the right level on the Halogens.  One online site indicates the LED rating is 20% of the Halogen but the available ones seem quite low if that is true.

The maplin ones are 2.5W IIRC, they aren't as bright as 50W halogen bulbs but its the kitchen not an interrogation centre.

They come in two colour temps, 5k and 3.4k. 5k is a bit too blue for my liking.

The bulbs themselves are cylindrical and my be a bit big by the sound if things.

I'd have a look in POUNDWORLD .Again if you change to halogen ( Iuse the 240v type) and fit a LED equivalent, make sure theoutput is sufficient. I use 50W ones in our kitchen and recently got a few LED ones to find that I've got to be careful which ones I replace as the LED ones are IMHO only about a real 20W. I've had 50W units from various places ,but found the ones from Wilko last longest, whilst the origonals from B & Q hardly lasted any ;ength of time. Getting the dud ones out  without a tool is easy, getting the new ones back in with the suction tool can be tricky .

Looking at Maplin and another online retailer of LEDs the G9 equivalents are going to be too big in diameter so unless I can find a narrow one it will probably be a non starter.

The tool is not to pull the bulb out but to undo the surround.

Hadn't thought about Wilko's will have a look there as I have one close by.  The B&Q ones really are naff though!

EBay for 5050 SMD LED bulbs. Can get at least 4, for under a tenner. Whetehr they're all certified or even... safe...

These look OK... Though I haven't bought these exact bulbs... They have a clear plastic capsule around the head preventing fingers from touching.

Look quite similar to many of the other LED G9s but againg they are too large for my lamps. Good find though as the price is good for qquantity buys, as long as they are reliable! Cheers.

I recently bought some LED spots for the kitchen from an ebay seller called strictlylamps and they've been good so far.

Had a look at their Ebay shop and prices look good.  Thanks for the tip.
