Help. VRS Fabia issues

Featured Replies

Please help

Last night I completed a 200 mile journey. Stayed overnight at a hotel and jumped in car this morning and it's now stuck in what seems to be limp mode.

I'm out in the sticks with work and the car won't go any faster than 40mph. It's making very loud spool noises which would possibly indicate a blown off boost pipe but I can't find it from above.

I'm pretty new to Fabia ownership. Mines got a hybrid turbo and a front mount with all different pipe work.

Apart from the cold weather and a possibility someone has tampered with it I can't see how it would happen. I've done 700 miles in the last week all perfectly fine.

Anyone have any other ideas apart from a hidden pipe blown?

Ps. No warning lights on.

Could be pipe popped off like you say could be sticking vnt with cold weather.

only way to get out of limp mode is to get it read on vcds and clear the error.

do you reckon its worth him trying the manual reset with the battery?

Vnt??? Can this be fixed without spending on a turbo?

The vnt is connected to the turbo but is known to get stuck. If you had a long drive and the temp dropped alot it could explain it.

It is reachable if you dont have strut brace at the back of the exhaust manifold. There is a guide on here on how to clean it, which you wont be able to do where you are but it has pictures and a better description of the location. sometimes it can be freed up by pushing the lever a bit.

not sure on manual reset I have never tried it.

wont help now but for future you might consider investing in a blutooth obd2 connector off ebay or amazon.

you can get an app on android so i am guessing there should be one for apple, which allows you to scan faults and clear using your phone. Mine has come in handy a few times for a few peoples cars.

Mine arrived today! lol sound advise indeed!

Ok. Will see if I can get this sorted.

Manual reset with battery?

Was told by previous owner the car has a hybrid turbo. Does this mean it will still have the vnt and not be a conventional waste gated type?

To the best of my knowledge hybrid turbo is mainly just upgrading the turbine and bearings (at least thats what happened to mine).

All of them still have the vacuum actuator unless it has been replaced by an electronic one.

If you open your bonnet and you have the little black vacuum control box at the top drivers side then I doubt it will have the electric one.

I'd say this is a lower boost pipe blown off mate!

A proper hybrid would have had the compressor and exhaust housing bored out and larger wheels fitted.

There are no 'bearings' as such.  It's a brass thrust bearing where the shaft floats on a layer of oil.  Slightly different operation to ball or roller bearings.

It should definitely still have the normal vac system and actuator and the VNT inside the turbo housing will remain untouched unless you have a very highly modified engine and there was a reason to change to that.

Thankyou bazmcc, thrust bearing was the word I was looking for. Think it depends on what stage of hybrid, mine wasnt bored out(i dont think), just upgraded thrust bearing and compressor wheel. (Well its guaranteed to around 200bhp which is more than I have)

Ok cheers chaps. I'm 240 miles away from home so fixing it myself in the dark with no tools is a no go.

I'm having the aa come to tow it away to my friend who is a mechanic.

But being the aa they are sending a 'numpty' out first.

If he fixes it I will be very surprised lol. If not it goes home.

Work have kindly given me a fiat 500. Awful bloody thing.

As said aa guy couldn't fix it. Now on route to South Wales.

Could also be map sensor

Goosemann, those 'numpties' are validating what you are saying before they get a tow truck out to you. He could have simply jacked it up and reconnected a pipe for you which is not something a low loader engineer would do as they are not mechanics but simply towing lads.

And to point it bluntly, you don't have a ******* clue what's wrong with it yourself, so who are you to suggest otherwise to someone who is only trying to help you.

Having said that, I hope you get it fixed as it's a right pain in the arse to have a slightly working car!

Peace,

A son of a 'Numpty'

I call them numpties as in 15 years of driving and aa membership I have not once been put back on the road. If I was in my area or local I would guarantee you what the fault is and 90% of the time fix it. When your stuck on a construction site in a pile of mud, crawling around on the floor with no tools is not my idea of fun and would cost me money in ruined clothes.

Yes it is annoying. Especially as I've owned the car a week, it's my first skoda, and I've had to sort other faults on the car as well.

If it wasn't entertaining to drive it would be in the bin now.

Right car finally made it to garage. After aa lost it and left it at a public services with the keys on the tyre.

It's been stripped down and put on vag com. Turbo and vnt are fine. The AFM is reading zero through out.

So fingers crossed a new AFM and back to normal. Bit pee'd at that as i could have sorted that. Gonna need to invest in an OBD lead for the lap top I think. Also found that my smaller fan is in bits. Bloody cars.

All you had to do was unplug the maf.  It would have reset to 550mg/s as a default and the car would have been driveable.

Handy way to double check a MAF even if you can see 0 on the airflow on a fault scan.

If you have a smart phone, a bluetooth OBD is less than a tenner and Torque Lite or similar apps are free on the play store or i-thingy.

Bought. And downloaded lol. Don't want this to happen again. Going to be doing a lot of miles all over the country in this job so need the thing reliable.

what model did you go for?

I went for the bluetooth version but didn't realise my laptop doesn't run bluetooth! :wall:

Have heard the WI-FI is an easier option.

Bluetooth obd2 and I have a couple of apps on my iPhone to try out.

Torque lite isnt bad but doesnt always pick up faults that vcds does.

keep seeing one advertised in vw mag called iobd2, not tried it yet.
