Thanks Briskoda

Almost bought a 1.4TSI out of warranty and then read of some expensive engine replacements on here. I'm not going to risk it.

Thanks for the info guys.

Now going to spend a bit more and get something in warranty.

What car?

You know it's only the twincharged 1.4tsi?

Other 1.4tsi engines are much better.

I'm assuming from the post in his RS5 thread a Polo GTi for his Mrs to learn in. I was looking at A1's the other day, 4 different 1.4 engines all with different outputs! Very confusing.

Avoid the 1.4 tsi at all costs!

My other halfs Golf GT 170bhp has been an absolute dog!

All new top end gaskets

New injector seals

Gearbox got rebuilt at 40k as 2nd gear synchro had gone

Now on 65k miles and 5th and 6th synchro have gone!

Crap crap engine / transmission (well the manual anyway)

Yes, the twin charged job in the Polo GTI.

I now have a 2.0TSI scirocco. Big step down from the RS 5 but needs must. My running costs will decrease by £540 per month. Happy days.

 £540 per month.

Did the RS5 run on the excreted juices of virgin unicorns ?!

Trouble is I used it as a daily drive.

I suffered a close shave too. Very nearly traded my current mk 1 Vrs for a new one. The Twincharger is not a crap engine: when it works it is very responsive and has a really wide powerband. It is VW and their quality control that has gone awry and tbh I always suspected that such an exotically specced little engine would mean long term trouble. Such a shame as VW always used to make bombproof engines :(

This is how I called it when I initially test drove the Mk2 Furby Vrs alongside a Giuliietta at Allams a few years ago.

I don't know what the very latest 1.4 ACT turbo 140 is like. The performance figures are good (even a midrange Octy Estate is a 130mph car with this engine) but I can just see the cylinder activation units going tits up in the future :/

We have the new golf with this engine and its good (ish), returns 40mpg with really terrible journeys but really isn't that fast to be honest. It feels quick away but you soon realise it is only a 1.4 and I think the diesel Tiguan would be faster!
