Rust on front arches.

Featured Replies

Hi.

Firstly I will introduce myself. I am Dec from sheffield and owned my first skoda for around 3 months and very happy. I purchased a silver octavia rs with 86k on clock full skoda history. Only thing that bugged me was the rust on all four arches and boot plate recess. I managed to knock few hundred off to close the deal. I booked car in to have this sorted at a local bodyshop.

However my concern is after 8 weeks the front arches are showing signs of corrosion again in the same place. I informed the bodyshop and theyve agreed to try and sort it.

He did add at the end though that they spent alot of time and work on the car and if it comes back again it'll need new wings (not secondhand). Is this correct?

The rust wasnt major or rotting judt slight bubbling and the usual horrid rust colour especially on a silver car.

Thanks.

Hello and welcome.

Rust shouldnt really be commonplace unless areas have been neglected.  Do you have any pics of the areas?

Hi, I havent got any pics no but the rust in question starts from the bottom sill and working its way round the edge of the arch that has gone round onto the face of the arch. The area that has reappeared is around the sill area And on the inner arch. The bodyshop blamed it on time of year but was surprised on the time taken for it to come back. Hence sorting it free of charge.

Mine's exactly the same mate, I'm going to be sorting it myself

What are you able to do that a bodyshop cant? I paid 500 for front wings, rear quarters and boot resprayed. Its just the front wings that appear to be rusting through. He said he'd treated the metal n used all correct paint n some oylwax? Something like that.

Bit of an attitude there mate? What I have is experience doing it to save me giving somebody else 250 quid!

That ok with you?

No attitude mate just came across wrong sorry.

no worries. I tend to do all work on a car myself unless it's something that needs equipment I don't have or can't get my hands on. Stuff like this isn't very hard to do, just needs a little patience and a couple of spare hours- it's quite rewarding in all fairness, seeing it all squared off and looking great again

Yea it is good to see your pride and joy at its best. Especially if you have achieved it. Think I have some 1200 grit paper and thats it lol.

Will have to wait and see how the car comes back from bodyshop. Not really wanting to go down the new wing route havent got the spare coin.

There was some silver and black wings on ebay going for 40 quid or something like that. No idea how the paint is but after a good machine polish I'd imagine they'll be as good as anything

Thanks! Can imagine ill be spending a lot of time on the bay. Although I was advised on staying away from second hand wings because of not knowing there history and could rust the same. Or maybe thats just the bodyshops preference.

Just be sure you ask them pics of the areas that are going to bad, there' also a few people breaking cars on here if you keep an eye out and there's bound to be a local scrappy near you breaking an mk1 octavia in the same colour, I'm pretty sure the wings are the same on all models
