Which one of these should my brother buy?

Featured Replies

My brother lives in Stockholm, Sweden, and needs to move some stuff from the UK back to Sweden. He's decided that the cheapest way to do this is buy a car in the UK and drive back to Sweden with said stuff.

He also wants a car anyway so he's not totally mad.

Anyway, he emailed me these options he's seen on Auto Trader, but which, if any, of these would the good people on Briskoda choose? Also, any other ideas welcome.

Volvo estate V 90:

Merc C Class Estate about 2001 to 2003:

or it’s bigger brother E Class estate same era:

and on the outside lane with slightly funny looking eyes is the Honda Accord Touring:

He also suggested this Octavia L&K, but knowing his thoughts on Skoda it might be a joke. More fool him.

My first instinct would be the C class. It's diesel, posh, reliable but servicing will be a bit more, but then again you don't need to go to a Merc garage so it shouldn't be any more than the Skoda to service.

E class is far too big. It's like a barge so no good for the city really.

The Volvo is a classic, solid, built-like-a-tank Swede so will be cheap to service, but not sure they're as reliable as they should be?

The Honda will be the most reliable but way too thirsty with the VTEC engine, although you'll save on never having to get it fixed.

Thanks for your help

You mean a V70 I presume, but then wasn't sure if you meant an XC90!

Of those I'd take the Volvo - far better carrying capacity than the C-Class (dependant on how much he's moving initially I suppose).

I also prefer a Volvo to a Merc, but of course that's personal preference. Never got on particularly well with anything I've driven from Stuttgart. Volvos on the other hand have always been faithful, and reliable companions :)

I'd go with the Merc C class, not least because I've recently known a couple of people who had major reliability issues with Ovlovs.

Petrol auto Volvo will have a drink problem too, probably far more than the Honda.

That era of Merc wasn't one of their high points and they're quite prone to rust.

Not being in the city I'd probably be tempted by the Merc but get the Honda or Volvo. Volvo shouldn't be too hard to move on either, big load luggers are always popular even when they get old.

It's going to be a lottery at that age and budget anyway.

I would get the volvo but one with the D5 engine rather than the thirsty 2.4 petrol,

I had a honda accord as a hire car for a month and quiet liked it altho the one i had was also diesel
