1.8t Engine Oil

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Just after a bit of info.

Just picked up a 2001 Octavia 1.8t 4x4 Estate.

I usually do my own servicing so just need to know if Halfords 5w30 Ford spec fully synthetic oil would be ok to use.

I don't do many miles and it will be getting changed every 12 months.

I ask because it is on offer at the moment for £10 for 4L.

The car has 121k on the clock.

And there is the problem loads of topics and most of it useless and wont answer my question.

I'm sure it will be more than up to the job but thought I would ask.

I'm not very up on VAG as I run a Skoda as my company car so all the work is done at the Main Dealer.

This is just my weekend toy.

Thanks for the reply though

Does it have any VW specs on the oil?

I haven't looked yet but I'm not too worried if it hasn't.

LE: after more research for my friend this Halfords 5W30 Ford oil is equivalent to the Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A5 ,oil special designed for Ford engines and they don't have any VAG specifications , so no good for the old 1.8T

Castrol Magnatec 5W30

Quantum 5w40

Shell Helix 5w30

Thanks for the recommendations guys but I was looking at the Halfords oil as its half price at the moment.

I'm not on a budget but cant see the point in spending a lot on oil when I wont be doing many miles.

This is my weekend run about / Fishing wagon and as such I don't think I will do more and a couple of thousand miles a year.

I will be changing the oil at least every 12 months well if I have it that long as I'm a bugger for swapping motors.

The problem is everyone quotes it must be VW spec well I could understand if it was a PD engine but is not.

I may just try the Halfords stuff anyway as I cant see why it wont do what I want it to. It may not have VW specs but I would think its as good as any most oils that were around 12 years ago.

Ill do a bit more checkin.

A non VAG spec oil is much likely to compromise the turbo, these engines run hot,you need a strong oil

20 pouds for oil is a small sum for 1 year of safe usage

Was going to echo the same thing, our turbos run bushes rather than physical bearings, so oil quality is really important on these engines.

There's a  guy on here at the moment who has just bought a vrs that looks like the previous owner wasn't very picky on his oil and he now needs a new turbo.

At the end of the day its your choice buddy, but the extra £3 at euros could be money well spent if you get my drift.

I must say the euro oil looks like a decent buy so may as well go for that.

This is a long shot......If you are really into penny pinching if you were to buy 8 on Carparts 4 less. Whack in a promo code CP15LESS. and its less than £10.62 per 5 litres!

Never understand why people are happy to skimp on the life blood of the engine.

Vag has oil specs for a reason. Ford specs are not the same.

And as usual some people don't read all the post properly.

Firstly I'm not penny pinching but I cant see the point in spending silly amounts on oil that will only do 2-3000 miles.

We all know that VW have specs and ford have specs and all the others have specs they want everyone to use.

The problem I have is that Skoda and most of the VAG group only seem to be interested in listing oil that is suitable for extended service intervals.

If the grade is correct then I see no reason why I shouldn't use a non VW spec oil in a car that is 13 years old will be doing low mileage and have regular services.

You also have to remember that its not a modern engine design either after all it dates back to the mid 90s.

I use this. What the main dealers use and good value IMO.

For normal service intervals, cheap enough what VW etc recommend.
