1.8T White steam? Cold?

Featured Replies

Hello guys

I have just brought a 1.8t - and im just checking a few things.

In the morning i see a little white smoke / steam from the exhaust (it disperses quick and doesnt smell of anything).

I assume this is normal due to the cold weather etc (and from what i gather when a petrol car burns it produces water vapour).

But once ive drove 10 miles to work so the car is fully warmed up - i still see a little when sat in traffic or stationary?

So is this still normal for a petrol turbo?

The car does not seem to be losing any coolant or oil - also doesnt from what i can see smoke when driving atall.

I followed an S4 the other day off the motorway (so i assume his car was fully warm) and his did the same?

The only thing i can think to check if it is not normal is the PVC lines and valve?

Any help would be great.

My Audi with the same engine started doing this around 10,000 miles ago. Last week the smoking got much worse etc and the turbo went boom.

I think it's a sign the turbo is on it's way out.

Time of the year, it's just steam, don't panic unless it turns blue/black

some cars even have water dribbling from the back box when going round corners--must be full  !!!   doesn't mean there's a problem just need a good blowing out

Mine does this too and it is way far different than yours. Also had the same phenomenon with all my previous cars (Octavia MK1 1.6 petrol, Fabia MK1 1.2 12v petrol, PUG 106 1.4 petrol) . Plus I don't think that 10 miles are enough to fully warm up the engine so there is no visible steam when stationary. Since this white 'cloud' disappears very quicky and has no petrol or oil smell everything is fine.

DO NOT SNIFF YOUR EXHAUST while someone revs your car because then you WILL smell a bit petrol, you will get dizzy and you will start thinking that you smelled petrol thus you have a problem with your engine.

Enjoy your car, not its fumes!!

Take it for an "Italian Drive" that'll stop it from steaming!

Its just condensed water stuck in the baffles and at the bottom of the exhaust..... unless its a cloud of white smoke which is either a headgasket or turbo.

I wish it had gone the above way with my car. Ö
