Service interval

Featured Replies

Following a change in role in my job, I've done only 1k work miles and only 10k miles in total over the last year. My car is on variable long life servicing so I am a bit concerned about the fact it might now run for approaching two years for shorter journeys on the same oil. I am tempted just to get it serviced and move to fixed 10k service intervals. Would you or am I being over cautious? Please note the car is on 111k miles.

Cheers

Adam

Go fixed or go home.

Doing less than 10k, you should be doing annual services.

Thanks. Kind of my thinking too. Presumably it just needs setting in vcds/vas after the service so the monitoring is accurate going forward?

You should be able to do it with the stalk for the trip reset - have a look in handbook.

Ok cheers. I have vcds anyway but I will read the manual, it never occurred to me that this could be set like that.

Just use VCDS then, that's what I do.

True but my ocd means I need to know the trip stalk trick now!!

Resetting the service indicator using the dash button automatically defaults the service interval to fixed.

The only way to go back to variable from fixed is via VCDS or the dealer.

I too prefer fresh oil at least once a year. It's well proven more frequent oil changes extend the life of turbo's and cams etc.

Yes I read it worked like that (from the manual!). I am plumping for a service soon. Thanks again all.

Like he said:)

Mine is being changed to fixed from variable at my next service in February

I now only do 6K a year due to part retirement and full retirement in July

Out of interest if I do go to fixed, I presume I will have different oil. Will it be safe to mix it with the longlife oil I have a nearly full 5L bottle of for top ups pls?

If you have a dpf then you will have to use 507.00 spec oil regardless. There is nothing to stop you using long life oil on fixed services.

Think its the same oil for both fixed and variable servicing on the cr engine. Not sure what you've had in your pd but SWMBO Seat has always been on fixed and uses 5w-40 502.00 505.00 505.01

PD as a minimum needs 505.01 but 507.00 is not much more expensive.

Thanks. The 507.00 is what I have spare but I don't have a DPF fortunately.

Just keep using 507.00 even though you're on fixed.

Will do cheers

Yeh the 507.00 will be a slightly better quality oil than the 505.01, stick with it.

The 507 oil is more or less the same as the 505, slightly different viscosity with a lower ash content which is needed for the DPF. Mine is on fixed and usually gets 505 oil when serviced. I also have some 507 oil which I use for topping up and haven't found any problems so far.

Just make sure it is 505.01 and not 505.00, if you use the latter say bye bye to your camshaft.
