Changing stock backbox

Featured Replies

Right, changing the stock backbox for another stock one I got hold. For the life of me can I get the damn thing in!!! THe old one fell to bits as I was taking it out but they're both cut in the exact same spot- must be a manufacture cut mark on the pipe or something for changing backboxes as the replacement one is cut there and the car obviously had a replacement at same point and was also cut and clamped in the same spot.

Any pointers on getting the thing back before I lose patience and hacksaw it to bit?

the pipe has some dots exactly like this.Cut on the middle ones (2)

Both were already cut but I'm going to take a wire brush to the replacement one to double check it's cut at the right place- it seems to be the right place, only piece in the pipe thats straight long enough for a joiner

AFter a double check after a wire brushing it's definitely been cut in the right spot, It just does not want to back in over the rear frame and I don't wanna force it too much as it's right on the brake lines

That's what's left of the old one. Tried a repair round the tail pipes but it was too far gone then when wiggleing it to get it out the thing just came to bits

And thats just to show where the new one is cut- found the punch marks so it's definitely cut in the right spot but I just can't get it over the damn frame!! HEEEELP!

Bit of a smart arse comment the e, hope it entertained you.

Anybody who's actually worked on their vrs' exhaust know a trick with this? Otherwise it's good old brute force in the morning.

I'm sure you can drop the axle down fairly easily?? When my stock one came off it was cut right by the axle for ease

Are you doing this on stands or have you access to a vehicle lift?.

Undo both bottom rear shock bolts and drop the axle down

Cheers for the replies guys- was stood staring at it and then realised. I just popped it up on ramps to save a few minutes of time. Was stood looking then realised the axel was still under compression- doh. Gonna jack it up properly this morning and once the axel has dropped it should fit through no probs. Gotta say that silencer has to go down as the one of the world's largest apart from the ones on Mercs- does sound canny with a mufflerectomy mind, couldn't help myself having a rev with it off lol

All fitted sorted and did the n249 bypass and removed the charcoal canister while the weather was ok.
