Golf Mk2 oil pump

Featured Replies

I've been reading elsewhere on the net that the 8v GTI has a tendency to have its oil pump die on it. How would I know if this was going to happen? How often should it be replaced, and how much of a job is it?

Tricky unless you've got an oil pressure gauge. Most oil pumps can be replaced by dropping the sump, don't know whether that's feasible on your engine, or what else is in the way. If you can't, it will involve either moving subframes about, or lifting the engine out. I've never heard of a preventive replacement schedule for oil pumps.

In an extreme case you will see the oil light on. More often at low revs as the pump will be turning more slowly.

Check your oil light comes on when the ignition is on prior to starting, it's not uncommon for people to remove the lamp to mask problems.

Being a mechanical numptie though, it looks quite complicated, but how complicated it is in reality i dont know.

Thats a good guide that one. Should be a breeze.
