Roof bar recommendations

Featured Replies

Not sure what the Skoda bars look like for the Mk3, but I went for those on my Mk2 as due to them being specific to the car they do not stick out past the feet. I personally think this is a much neater look on the hatch especially if they are being left on for a while.

Of course 80 is exceeding the limit, in the UK. Some square bars have a slot underside, which requires a trim cover, see my comment on Paddy Hopkirk bars

Not in Germany, France or Austria though, which is the only place I use my roofrack at those speeds

Another vote for thule

Hi All,

I was looking to buy the Thule Wingbar Edge 9582 for my VRS estate from Amazon as they have the same low price everyone else has and a great returns policy. Few questions to those in the know:

  1. Will these fit directly onto the roof bars on my vRS estate or do I need adaptors (if so, what)?
  2. They are required to carry a large roof box down to sud de la france and back twice a year. - was thinking the (overpriced) Thule Motion 900. How does this connect to these bars? Any adaptors required?
  3. The bars look very low profile - any clearance issues with the integrated radio/GPS aerial ontop?

Thanks guys.

Wingbar Edge (in medium) fit the car, but are a very tight fit. This was the size recommended by Thule for the car. However, the fit is so much on the tight side that there are some positions you cannot get the bars to sit at. Though i don't know if the smaller size would be too small.

I bought the edge and thule outride bike mount and they all look awesome.

Really happy with the edge bars and will leave them on for most of the year. Absolutely no noise at most speeds - some wind noise at motorway speeds. Certainly no whistling!

I can say that with two bikes on the roof, there is some loss of mpg!

1. Yes they will fit out of the box.

2. If a thule roofbax, they will have 'T-Trac' adapters which slot into the groove on top of the bars

3. I don't have an antenna, so cant answer the question but i don't think it would be a problem as the roof box will sit higher than the bars, which are already probably clear of the antenna.

Thule Wing Bar 969 available for Octavia 3 hatch or 961 wing bar for estate

Thule Footpack 754, fitting kit 1726  Octavia 3 hatch or Thule 757 footpack for Octavia 3 estate, (info taken from Thule.co.uk website).

I have Thule Wing bars 961 and 757 footpack (for roof-rails) to fit my Atlantis 780 roofbox onto, they are well made and very quiet, I use them for the twice anual trip down to the alps, that roofbox gets filled with 4 snowboards a set of ski's, various pairs of boots and 3 helmets and other small things that fit in the gaps

Only really noticed the noise of the roof-load over 100mph, I had cruise control set to 100mph on the Autobahns.

Thule will tell you that the roofbox is only recommended upto 130kmh (80mph) but it was absolutely fine for us!, some german, Dutch and swedish cars with thule roofbox's were passing us at 120mph.

If you get the Wing bars and want to add a roofbox you will need the T track adaptor kit (£25) as the quick grip claws are not recommended for use on Wing bars due to them being very open when gripped onto the bars (I tried it, did not like the look of it, so got the fitting kit, the kit also it also lowers the box down by about 50mm)

Luckily for me my current set up for the 330D is exactly the same as required on the Octavia 3 Estate

Spend the extra money and get the wing bars (Dont bother with Aero bars as they are not as efficient as the wing bars) and unless you want a VERY noticeable drone at 65+mph forget the square bars

As per Tamkyo101 said above, the Thule Wingbar 969 fit an Octavia Hatch. I am going away in the summer and a friend has offer to lend me his Thule 969's that he has for his Ford Kuga. (Same foot pack). The only issue is he lives the other side of London and I am in Kent, so I want to check before I go,

Does anyone know if these would fit a Mk3 VRS? if they fit a Hatch (as quoted above), I can't see why they wouldn't fit a Estate, as the width of the car is the same, so surely the roof rails are the same width apart?

Has anyone tried the 969's on an estate? They are only 9cms longer than the 961 for the Estate as mentioned on

https://roofracks.co.uk/Thule-Fit-Guide/_-/?make=Skoda&model=Octavia&version=III&type=5-door-Estate&rails=with-roof-rails&modelYear=2013-plus&id=33

so I think they will be ok as long as the slot on the underside goes in far enough.

Any advice would be helpful.

thanks

Dave
