Focus RS going....getting new Subaru Sti in May

Featured Replies

The new WRX is the new 2.0 direct injected engine, the 2.5 is going to quietly vanish into history. I saw that the STI version still uses the 2.5, but I can't see it being more than just a quick stopgap. The new Levorg (idiotally named, yes) is going to have a 300 hp 2.0 DIT in STI form, so the Impreza will get it too.

More interestingly, they're only making it available with the CVT in the Levorg STI, just as it is in the Forester XT, so I can see it spreading to the rest of the range.

Hulkster get yourself a proper Focus RS (not a lardarse hippo volvo) and pocket yourself 10 grand in the process

Lol. I'll stick with my 360bhp lardarse for now.

With all due respect, Scoobynet is not the forum it used to be many years ago. It is now full of trolls and idiots just out to trash everyone who has a non-turbo car or who isn't one of the clique. It can be a pretty harsh environment for noobs. Your best bet is to join one of the regional forums - NESF (North east Subaru Forum) in the North East is the biggest regional Subaru forum in the UK. I am one of the admins on there.

The problem with the Subaru 2.5 engines is well known and documented. The crux of the matter is that Subaru chose to use a cast piston with a very high silica content, which made the pistons very brittle and susceptible to cracking due to heat expansion in the combustion chamber. So much so that even a moderate shockwave in-cylinder such as a rev limiter can break them. As long as you haven't modified your Subaru engine in any way during the warranty it will be covered. However Subarus weren't built to be driven like a granny on a Sunday knitting club meet. By contrast the pistons used in the 2.0 model 2004/5 are bullet-proof and the standard engine internals are good for 450bhp. Having said that the DCCD 6 speed gearboxes on the widetrack 2005-onwards cars are almost indestructible and can handle 600bhp without missing a beat.

Personally I have regretted ever letting any of my Subarus go - I love them. My 2.5 Hawkeye STI got sold a month ago and I am still in mourning   However I chose to fully forge my engine before any piston/ringland failure. However not something you should or would even have to think about on a brand new car. You would expect the manufacturer to learn from their mistakes and at the very least put a forged piston in there instead of those Nestle ones!

Subaru decided not to provide the UK with any more Imprezas after the release of the 2008 onwards hatch (ugly) and saloon as they only sold a total of 300 saloons in the UK and they were dogged by the engine failures. A good friend of mine is a saloon owner and his engine failed on the rolling road and he was only running a moderate 360bhp - only 30bhp more than standard. Warranty was voided by Subaru because of his modifications in warranty, which he fully accepted. They quoted him £7,800 for a new engine. However there have been a multitude of standard engine failures without any mods.

The new 2014 saloon does nothing for me - it looks like an EVO X from the front. I think that if Ford had made the Focus RS a 4WD car they would have taken a lot of the Subaru/Evo community with them. I love the Focus RS - very pretty cars and I would love to own one sometime, but I am still in love with Subarus! Next stop for me is a Litchfield Type 25 Spec C Impreza for my 50th birthday....in 3 years time!!!

I think you made the right decision - for what my opinion is worth anyway!

Good luck with your future choice

Good call on the Litchfield spec C. :)

Honestly? It was the subaru owners on Scoobynet - since I posted on that site about getting one of these there has been a constant stream of warnings about the 2.5 engine in the new one. Basically it's the same one Subaru have used for years that has been dogged by ringland failures. There are some shocking stories about Subaru trying to dodge out of warranty claims by blaming driver error.

The dealer I was buying mine from was nearly 4 hours travel away, and I wasn't comfortable with that fearing possible future engine problems. Also, the 5 year warranty Subaru are banding about is actually only 3 years on the Sti. What does that say about Subarus confidence in their own product?

Reviews are starting to come out.

It's being criticised for it's turbo lag, dated interior, poor fuel economy and high running costs.

Sounds like a classic Scoob. :D

From what I can see the Golf R would be a far bettter buy, if a bit less involving to drive I suspect.

I've just replaced my Octavia with a Forester XT, which shares the platform, engine and gearbox (detuned) with the new coming WRX. It is miles and miles ahead of any other Subaru I've been in.

I'm a person who appreciates simple functionality, so I don't see why the new generation of interiors is getting so much stick. The plastics are soft touch, the dash isn't cluttered with crap, like in a whole bunch of modern cars and its the nicest interior of any car I've had by far. I also test drove a Superb 4x4 Elegance and I can honestly say theres very little between them, in fact the larger seats in the Subaru were more comfortable for me as I'm tall. As its a Subaru, yes, the boot is smaller than it should be and the head unit looks aftermarket (the 'Premium' models have a BT mic glued to the steering column for goodness sake), but it has come along massively from what they were like before.

It even has a real handbrake and fits a full alloy spare under the boot floor.

I've cracked. Now getting one again. This pic isn't mine (which is currently enroute via ship) but this is the same as mine will be. Hopefully getting it in the next few weeks. Due end of the month, but might be earlier.

Fingers crossed the engine won't let go on me.

It's under warranty anyway.

No issues waiting until later and then deciding, considering limited supply?

I thought they'd have managed to shift them to die hard Scoob fans.

Nice :)

I was in the local dealer yesterday, but they didn't have their STI in yet :(

The trouble with the die hards is they don't want the 'unreliable' 2.5.

One of the lads on our Subaru forum went to drive this one Saturday and he said it drives lovely........good luck with it mate

They will be a bargain in 3 years time. Really like the new shape!

Perhaps, but I don't want a bargain that's potentially been ragged to death or crash repaired. I want to know only me has been the owner!

I would have one on a instant.

Love Subarus. Had 2 new Impreza Turbos back in '96 and '99.

Will add to my Lottery win bucket list.

We have a 330sti at work sat on ramp with an engines thats making quiet a nice tapping noise,

apparently quiet common with 2.5 lumps,

Should make a nice change to playing with volvos all day when i finally get chance to make a start on it

Just got back into my Octavia Blackline this morning, after a few weeks of driving the Subaru to run it in.

Wow. Honestly? The Skoda feels much more comfy and easy to drive. The clutch feels like a feather!

Did you see the next generation Scoob due in a year or two?

Early days, but looks closer to the concept car.

Yeah, other than the power, I hate pretty much everything else about the drive of the STI. Far too uncomfortable for everyday use. Thats why I went for the Forester XT, still has decent go but with a comfy ride.

Bossfox, are you referring to the Levorg STI? Thats definitely something I am interested in. Pretty much a Legacy STI.

Interesting. I may have to hold out for the next generation STi with the 2.0T engine. We were considering a Subaru Forester XT with the 2.5 but the engine issue reared its ugly head. The Yeti doesn't sound like anything at all compared to the Forester...

No pictures of the new car!?

There you go......

One day when I'm allowed to be less sensible I'll buy one. One day...one day...

There you go......

I like it. It looks awesome.

Does look a lot like an evo though.. Hmm.

The UK XT has the new 2.0 direct injected turbo engine. It's the same drivetrain as the new WRX.
