Painting a strut brace

Featured Replies

What have you guys painted your strut braces with? Am I best off using spray paint or hammerite with a brush?? Going to go back to original red to match my new cone filter

I sprayed mine the other day, was flaking in a few places so I buzzed over it with the side of a cutting disc on a grinder to get most of the paint off.

Sanded it with 400 grit paper.

Gave it a degrease.

Primer.

2 coats of paint and then left to dry :)

My paint is fine it's just that manky green colour. Did you use a rattle can then or hammerite and a brush?

get it powder coated? sure mine was around £10 to be done black....didnt have to bother stripping or cleaning it so saved alot of hassle

I just sanded mine down a bit with wet/dry, cleaned up and sprayed with Skoda Metallic Silver and finished with lacquer.

I might see how much to powder coat, if it's a tenner it will be cheaper than buying some paint But if not I will rattle can it

It's the old one of my smashed fabia isn't it? If it is then it only had one coat of hammerite on it and the red underneath was new. Get a tin of hammerite thinners and basically wipe the hammerite of it back to red, done that loads of times.

Yeah it is your old one so I will try using some thinners. Will it come off quite easy I thought hammerite was meant to be hard lasting? Where did you get the sticker for it? Want to keep that or put another on.

Mine was wrapped by the previous owner at the cost of £60... they seen him coming...

i like that ..... thats awesome

Mine needs re-doing.  Planning on sanding down with 240 grit wet and dry, then two coats of etch primer, two coats of black magic metallic, two coats of clear - then once clear dry and hard, polish using 1200 grit wet & dry then 2000 grit wet and dry, then machine polish.

If you use the hammerite cellulose thinner it just wipes off, regardless of how long it's been on. The sticker was from someone off either here or ebay, can't remember.

Having said that, it might wipe the red off aswell!

Haha I'm going to buy one of those cone filters just because it's red. Hope it sounds like my Jetex one!
