SWMBO gets early 50's on nearly every run as a minimum, her last vRS managed 62mpg on a gentle run along the M62/M1 on a good weather day, light traffic, that was with 172bhp but he way.

My Insignifica averages between 47-48mph on short runs to and from school, but is obviously better on motorway runs, by up to 10mpg if I'm lucky. F&@k the lorry drivers on there, if I'm doing an 'economy run' I'll do a speed to suit me, even if it means they can't quiiiite overtake me.

Couldn't agree more,a litho ugh a chap I know had a the Honda equivalent, best he ever managed was just over 75mpg, but people forget they are a smallish petrol engine lugging around a battery pack most of the time...

Lol. I wasn't recommending the Prius as the most economical car in the world, I was just using it as a toungue in cheek way to emphasize a point. Most people when you mention the word eco and car, will automatically think of a Prius.

Interesting discussion as I've noticed the same with my Octavia (haven;t got sixth on the Fabia so can;t comment on that). Better MPG (by some margin) in sixth at around 80 - 85 mph cruise than in sixth at 70mph. I can only assume it is something to do with the the tipping point at which the turbo improves economy as opposed to acting as a blockage in the exhaust system...

Fair point. After all turbocharged engines are more economical. I sometimes forget as most people take advantage and squeeze max power out of them. I'm sure a turbos spooling speed must have a "sweet spot" for economy.
