Skoda Octavia Clutch Low biting point

Featured Replies

Hello, I have a Skoda Octavia MkII 1.9 TDI PD 2006 thats done 110k miles and the clutch has a low biting point (have to push the pedal down quite far, not to the floor but not too far away), I think the biting point has got lower since I have owned the car (for 18 months) and sometimes its a bit clunky putting it into certain gears (third and reverse) which it wasn't before. Tried to do some tests like pumping the clutch pedal to see if that changed the biting point but didn't make any difference so that tends to make me think the hydraulics aren't the issue based on what others have said on air in the hydraulics and pumping helps to improve it. Also tried starting the car with it already in 5th gear and clutch not pressed and it didn't start but also didn't stall immediately, the car went forward slightly when it cranked so don't know if that means anything. Tried accelerating in a high gear up a hill and it doesn't slip, revs stay at a normal level so makes me think the clutch is ok.

Just wondering what  could be causing this, on some websites talking about low clutch biting point it mentions bleeding/replacing the brake and clutch fluid and if that doesn't fix it replacing the master or slave cylinders was mentioned. Would it be these instead of the clutch and DMF needing replaced as that seems to be what was required if the clutch has a high biting point and the clutch is needing replaced.

Any advice would be appreciated

Had similar problems on a few customers cars with 1.9 check the bottom of the gearbox for and wet patchs ( tell tale of a concentric slave failure) check your fluid level. The take off. For the clutch hydraulics comes from high up in the brake fluid reservoir so slightly low can effect clutch operation and then check for air via the bleed nipple I normally crack them (8mm) and let it draw through itself you will see bubbles if theres air in it. And if theres air but no wet patch on gearbox its the master cylinder as it leaks into itself so very awkward to diagnose

Think my 150k 1.9 is beginning to show signs of a low biting point. No gear change issues though.

I know the DMF is in need of replacement as the high gear heavy acceleration vibration is a lot worse than say 70k miles ago.

Is this a DMF or clutch thing I am feeling or what's been described ?

Hello, thought I would give an update, got the car into the Dealership and they said car had very bad vibration, they took the gearbox out and said I needed a clutch and flywheel replacement as flywheel had seized and clutch was badly worn so got them both replaced and it is running much smoother now.

Did you have a DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) or SMF conversion?

Did you have any other symptoms in the run up to the issue?

Glad you got it sorted

Got SMF conversion as it was cheaper and the guy said that most taxis get it done so thought might as well. It was just the vibration initially but then gear change got clunky and vibration got worse

Which kit did you fit. The Valeo 4piece or something else. Do you mind confirming the total cost of work. Was this at the main dealer?

To be honest I'm not sure as it was the dealer that did it and he didn't tell me what type of kit it was just that it was the SMF conversion, it was about 800 quid for clutch and SMF which is fairly expensive but it was at main dealer Henry's Skoda Glasgow so probably to be expected but the parts and repair has a two year warranty so that is a bonus in case anything did go wrong

Mines in now with the same issues low bite and clunky gear changing and a problem with reverse, the diagnoses is a new clutch and new dual fly wheel £650 I suppose i can't complain  2.0 tdi pd 55 plate with 175 k

I have this issue with a brand new high friction clutch and smf bite point is 1 mm off the deck and I cannot select rev or 1st if car has sat still for more than an hour. after driving a while it seems to get a little better at selection but as you slip into 1st while coming to a stop it catches gear and judders or engine brakes for you....... I think il try bleed the system first, am I right in thinking the reservoir on a pd170 octy 07 plate is in the back left of the engine bay clutch break and power steering fluid?
