225/45R17 on standard VRS?

Featured Replies

I am in need of a new set of tyres and have been looking at Avon ZV5's.

Thse are cheaper in 225/45R17 size so I was wondering is there any problems in fitting these to a standard car?

Na mate, loads use the 225/45/17 bud

As no doubt will come up

205s have rep of better mpg

225 the rep of a more planted feel :)

mine has 225 45 17 toyo's with r32 front and adjustable rear roll bar with coilovers etc my b@lls do grow when coming to corners

Funny, i've been looking at this recently too. The 225's will go on no problem but what I would say is if you can help it steer clear of the Avons - very hard to find people who've fitted them and actually like them! Not so grippy and a lot of road noise.

Similar price range look at Falken ZE914's or Hankooks if you can get them.

I hate my 914s lol

But then ive stretched the **** out of them so i supose i'll let them off :D

I like avons and falken ze914's :)

I like avons and falken ze914's :)

Thats cos ur kind to them :D

I got to use it more first lol

Toe correct is next week so i'll see what them falkens do then

I get along with mine, got the avon zz3 in 225/45/17 I guess tyres are just personal pref?

What do 225's on spiders look like?

Got images of the tyres ballooning from the rim!

You have to remember any 'summer' tyre in this climate isn't going to be very great.

They reckon summer tyres are pretty much all out of ideas around 6/7 degree's celcius (apparently) and winters are more beneficial.

However i just adjust my driving as i can't be bothered with this winter tyre malarchy

Ive never had a set of 225 on spiders but i had a set on a set of pro race wheels and i don't know if it was just the tyres (dunlop sports) but i wasn't to keen on how it drove,

I much prefer my 205 profile hankooks on my spiders, hence why i sold my pro race wheels back to lad i bought them off :giggle:

I have been running 225/45 ZR17 Michelin Pilot Sport 3's on my Octy VRS for 4 years now. I swear by them. My local tyre emporium friends do them for me for £100 a corner. That's a good discount on the RRP, despite sounding a bit expensive at first glance!

However - buy cheap, buy twice. The Mich's last for a very long time, give prodigous grip and traction in all conditions (I run them all year round and even snow isn't too much of a problem) run fairly quietly, give amaze-balls feedback, have nice stiff sidewalls so no 'slushy' feelings, and seem to shrug off even the deepest standing water at speed, even at lower tread depths (they have huge, wide channels in them...)

Best of all, unlike other cheaper brands I have used in the past, I never get any strange issues or 'mismatches' - like funny pulling to the left or right on the steering, that kind of thing.

And fitted to the standard 17 inch spiders? They look like they are supposed to be on there. There's no 'bulging' out from the rims or anything like that. They look like a perfectly matched stock tyre size.

Which ones do you have? I had some Ventus v12's on my last car (admittedly 16") and whilst they gripped well had a very soft tyre wall which made them quite wobbly and wasn't too inspiring. Are they any better in 17" guise?

I would stay away from Avons , I've got the Avon ZZ5 and there ****e ! I can not get the power down in this weather even at half throttle . I'm going to order the Michelins PS3 on Friday from a guy on facebook called Funky tyres he can do them for £92 a corner inc P&P .

I run 225/45/17 Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 2 on mine and they are brilliant and not badly priced too. I would say they are nearly on par with Conti sport contact 2/3's

I have some 225/45s on my VW Santa Monicas. I ran them on the road for a while, felt fine. Looked decent.

+1 the ps3 is by far the best tyre I've tried.

I'm pretty much at the end of the life of my ZV5's, and whilst they were OK at first, they really weren't that grippy after a short time, and are pretty naff in the wet. They really are bad for road noise too, though I don't have much to compare them to, other than the Michelins that were on there beforehand. By the time I had done 5,000 miles, it was really difficult to try and get the power down, unless conditions were very good. Now with about 4mm left, they are next to useless. Still infinitely better than the dangerous Doublestars on my backup wheels though. :D

Only difference is, mine are 205/55/16, but I certainly won't be buying Avons again. Though the ZZ3's were very good on the wife's old SLK many years back.

I have falken 914 they are fantastic! The grip is better, fuel economy has increased on the average 2 tab up by 3mpg. And before people say buy premium... I had continental premium contact 2's set of 4 road noise is much better on the falkens

I have 225/45 Avon's, they do look quite chunky, I had to space them from my coilovers because they where to close

I have bit the bullet and put a set of 225/45 17Nexen N3000 on today. The drive home can only be described as gopping! The Nexen's handled the water with ease and I am able to get more power down. So far they seem like a good choice as the chap at the tyre place recommend them as he runs them on his 3.2 Omega estate and never has any problem with them.
