Battery fuse box let me down tonight. :(

Featured Replies

Electrics shut down whilst driving, but luckily got to a car park to come to a stop.

Melted alternator feed in fuse box, must have been arc-ing for a while.

Recovery guy bolted it to the battery and all was well to get home.

Battery good and alternator charging it ok.

Can any VAG one fit from the same era as long as it has all the fuse lines in ?

Bonus....... It cleared my fault codes.

Cheers, matt.

Possibly, but it is the lead itself that causes this problem normally due to a resistance build up in the terminal so really you need both.

Alternator Feed Wire & Fuse box ?

I'm afraid so, yes. If you search melted fusebox in the octy 1 section you can see people's tales of woe for yourself.

So this is why the fuse box from the top of my octy vRS went on Ebay for reasonable money.  I never realised there was an issue.

"Issue" is being polite I think.

Anyone know the part number for the Black Feed Line to the alternator ?

get one made mate

Taken from the useful part numbers sticky -

The battery top fuse holder is part no 1J0 937 617 D

The alternator cable is part no 1J0 971 349 GN

You will find getting a cable made will be nearly as expensive if not more than the oe part as it has several other connecting plugs as part of the wire to supply other items at the front of the loom.

Have you tried in the for sale section to see if anybody has one they are breaking?

Gone used OEM. :)

The trouble with getting an end put on is that by the time this type of fault manifests itself by melting the box, the heat created by the resistance build up in the joint has changed the properties of the cable.

I picked up a good used cable for not a lot of money last year. A used fusebox is ok, just check the colour of the blades between the nuts, as that is an indication of loose connections. if in doubt just change the relevant fuse - much cheaper in the long run.

Incidentally, it's not a bad idea to put a spanner on these to check the tightness from time to time to try to avoid this happening.

and get that temporary direct connection to the battery made through a fuse as soon as possible. Its your fire protection against a short to ground on that cable.

Yes, till an hour ago, but only drove it home from where I broke down. Not been using the car.

New fuse box now fitted, but need to get a connector for the end as it's getting hot. Don't want it to happen again.

Anyone know of a suitable connector ?

You still got the alternator cable ? Is it in good condition. Only need the battery end ?

Sorry, mr terryrebel above has already paid for the alternator complete cable from my car.  I do have the main battery top bit still though (for now) just without the alternator cable

Replace the whole alternator cable, not just the end. The cable is dirt cheap from a main dealer, so buy new to guarantee its going to work. A used one could be just as bad as the one you have now.

Going to cut and re-crimp a new connector for now and check it.

Need a cheaper fix as money is very tight. Alternator cable is £45 from what I can find.

I will change the cable if the new connector gets hot and at a later date if ok.

After over a week without driving my motor I have found someone with a suitable crimper today, so my car can go back on the road tonight. God ive missed her, SWMBO picasso is horrid to drive.
