intermittent growl grrrrrr

Featured Replies

Again another question about my new to me vrs.....

when cold anyway, at bite point/taking off point especially when cold there is a little growl occurring intermittently.

it happens in first, second and reverse and goes away once say above 1500 revs

what is it, it doesn't happen all the time and increasing less/if not at all when warm?

no problems with it stalling, starting or drop in power.

Fouled clutch plate?

  • Author

didn't think fouled clutch plates were common on newer cars......but im a clown

Leaky gearbox/hydraulic seals, pressure washing engine, driving in very wet weather can all be possible causes of fouling.

It's mostly in the first few gears of the day that it's noticed and usually but not always is accompanied by a jerky bite until the surface heats up and disperses contaminants... not saying gets rid off.

Anyway just a thought and perhaps not your scenario, could be a worn thrust bearing maybe?

would a thrust bearing not make a screech?

I'm no expert, just thinking aloud.

Whatever it is seems temperature influenced, how about recording the event on your phone from cold and taking the evidence to a mechanic.

It never happened once today....3 mile journey or so lots of cold, stop starting. nothing....i tried like hell to make it happen, nothing...

Cat in engine compartment. Has since departed?

id prefer that than the DMF

@Aspman

Don't joke, I knew of a guy who found exactly that under his Morris Minor bonnet I think.

Car was making screeching sounds...

Poor cat had gone up inside for warmth and then later when he started and drove of the poor thing was being cooked and mangled in the various workings, it wasn't pretty :-(

If you have the TSI engine in your VRS and this is new noise then this might be helpful. There is a turbo wastegate flutter that can occur around 1700 - 2500 revs on the TSi engine. I had mine fixed for free by the dealer when serviced. There is techical note on it. It was a bit of a growl so might be that and it was common to all the VRS TSI engines I think.

that certainly is the rev range....that might be it. Ill get it looked it when it goes in for its service.

Im not imaging it certainly but im probably trying to find a fault that really isn't there..

I have a similar dead rat story from a dealer. they ended up having to supply a new car.

Try listening to this on you tube. This is the same noise as my problem on my 2010 VRS done just under 40 k First one is seconds into video then there are 2 or 3 more.

This guy said  was fixed with new clutch.

It's a link I got from the Sirocco forum
