rear window brake lights on a pre FL

Featured Replies

Ive noticed that my rear window led brake lights are down to 4 LEDs only. As my MOT is due in March I want to replace my self

Never done work on any car, but as I spent XMAS watching all the Wheeler Dealers episodes, I am now an advanced mechanic that can do everything.

So where can I buy a replacement from?

Thank you for the reply, ive checked out the link and its very useful, may also take the time to fix the rear wash wipe

No problem, whats the issue with the wash wipe?

The rear wiper is fine, just no water coming through, after reading the excellent posts on this forum I appreciate it is a common problem, should be a 2 minute fix for me due to my high level of automotive mechanical engineering know how ;)

Yep, motors and fitment for the wiper motor are different on the hatch and estate.

As said, you should be able to get a replacement high level brakelight unit and wiper motor from Skodaparts.

Also just to say that I'm pretty sure the 3rd high-level brakelight isn't an MoT requirement. Better to have it working properly though, of course :)

At least 50% of the high level break light must illuminate for the MOT. I get an advisory every year for having one of the LeD's out but can't be bothered to replace the whole unit for the sake of one LED

As Anddenton said, Ive been told by the MOT garage that at least 50% of the high level light must illuminate. I'll give SKODAPARTS a call and get a replacement. My car is a hatch..

BTW, please take some time to check out my Turbo Issues post, those of you who have replied to this thread seem Knowledgeable  and I could do with some feedback

Fair enough, didn't know they'd added that as a requirement. Good to know.

I was quoted about £85 by Skoda dealer at first MOT this was picked up on but I'm sure somewhere like TPS will do them for more like £40

SKODAPARTS thank you, just checked out the link and it states suitable for Octavia 2 2004-2004 !!! Would it fit my 2005 pre facelift hatchback?

regards

That's a much better price, might consider changing my for that. Is that suitable for 2008 Octavia Scout (Estate) please?

As I am pressed for time, can I just remove the window light to get the car through the mot?

Mike, what tools do I need?

Great, I have a torex screw driver somewhere, where can I get trim removal tools from??

  • Author

just an update..

I managed to replace the unit myself, and as a complete novice it was relatively straight forward:

  1. Unscrewed a torex screw in the recess for the grab handle (the grab handle is actually attached to the boot lining)
  2. Prised off the lower part of the boot lid lining.
  3. Unscrewed two torex screws holding the upper boot lining lining in place (at the bottom)
  4. Unscrewed the rear parcel shelf tabs attached to the upper boot lid lining
  5. Prised off the upper part of the boot lid lining
  6. Unscrewed two torex screws holding the led light in place
  7. Prised out the led light, then detached from the wiring
  8. Installed new unit and put everything back in place

Finally, detached the rear wash wipe jet, soaked in coffee machine descaller overnight, used a sewing pin to clean out nozzles, sucked on said nozzle to remove dirt, reassembled and now have a clean back window.

Ran into the house screaming 'I am an advanced motor mechanic, now time to watch wheeler dealers' SHMBO impressed!
