1.2 TSI spark plugs

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking to change the spark plugs in my Octavia 1.2 TSI DSG, does anyone know of any guides etc? just wanting to know if theres anything special i need to do over a regular engine spark plug change

thanks!

Only the usual vag thing that the top of the insulator is coated in some special grease. (i.e. the bit that the plug lead goes on) I'm not sure why they do this, maybe to maintain the seal to the rubber inside the plug lead connector. I personally wouldn't bother.

Tsi plugs are pregapped and platinum/iridium tipped - don't try to adjust the gap as you will break them.

I'd be interested in what condition you find them in and at what mileage.

If they're iridium plugs then they're good for 50,000 miles.

What mileage are you at?

Hi,

sorry for the long delay, i changed the plugs this weekend, really easy job. the car has just done 53k and the book says they are to be changed at 50k. I've attached a pic of what they look like, really are on their last legs and knowing this i am definitely going to change them sooner than 50k next time.

car runs much smoother now. the plugs are NGK, replaced with NGK double platinum (they looked identical to the old ones) about the full set for under £50 i would recommend changing them before 50k

I had a look under my engine cover, and was intimidated to say the least, as I too would be interested to look at ( and maybe replace) the plugs, after having had a main dealer service as needed, but not yet covering plugs, same as this post.

I haven't a clue where the bloody plugs are though

Looks visibly more like coil packs etc that I've seen on say, my daytona motorcycle, looks a bit specialist and I think its a while before Haynes is coming out !

I would be interested to know if it runs a bit cleaner and smoother as like yours mine is approaching 50k, but on a 2.0TFSI

The tsi plugs are supposed to be torqued down as they must sit in a specific direction to prevent the spark being blown out by air forced into the cylinder.

Seriously? I can understand the importance of correct torque on spark plugs but orientation never crossed my mind.

Bet that is not an issue on my 2003 Toyota Echo

It's been a big thing with BMWs for some time and has crept over to vw group stuff now. It makes sense but I'm yet to come across the consequences of not tightening them correctly.

I dare say it's more critical at higher rpm.

I would imagine any new plug oriented any which way torqued correctly could be any worse that a used plug like that......

Couldn't say until a picture of said plug become available confirming its design. Its just a spark isn't it ?

The coil packs should just pop off like a plug lead once you've unplugged them and unbolted them (if they are secured as such).
