Google Nexus 7 - for kids?

Featured Replies

With the boys birthday being so close after Christmas (end of January) they always get given money rather than presents from most relatives/friends etc.

They have managed to amass approx. £100 each and have decided that they would like a tablet (spending it on something relatively useful rather than wasting it on rubbish toys!)

Was going to get them a HP Slate 7" (£99.91 from Currys/PC World) but there appears to no stock in the country at all - I suspect that they were merely trying to clear post Christmas stocks at that price.

From the research that I've done, the Google Nexus 7 is very good but the best price I can seem to find is £119 for the 32GB version.

Am I likely to get a sub £100 tablet or am I better getting the boys the Nexus and making the £20 difference up myself?

I'd go with the Nexus 7 having seen some of the cheaper tablets, they are slightly lacking

Cant go wrong with a nexus 7

My eldest lad who's 12 has one. We bought our youngest who was 6 at the time, a cheaper one.

It was ok, but responses on touch screen not as good, and screen resolution not as sharp.

For his 7th birthday just before xmas, we got him a 1st gen nexus 7 for £129 and he was delighted.

I wiuld definitely get them 1st gen nexus 7's for £119.

Hudl is a reasonable option, especially if you already have Tesco vouchers.

The only thing is that the quality of the Hudl seems a bit hit and miss. The first one we got for my son at Christmas kept freezing. We replaced it for another one, and that's been fine. I've seen similar stories about the Hudl elsewhere. But for about £60 worth of Tesco vouchers, it's a good buy if you can get a good one.

Nexus is a pretty solid buy.

I'm shocked how easily kids can work them. My 3yr old can find his way round the iplayer app quite a thing for endless Mr Tumble repeats :peek:

Thanks for the comments - just placed an order for two of the Nexus 7 tablets.

:D

Your kids will love them mate.  My 9 year old bought one and he loves it.  I originally said to him to buy a cheap "chinese" one as I wasn't convinced that he would use it.  He has more than proved me wrong.  It has been his best purchase yet!

Tablets arrived yesterday and I set them up last night - first impressions are very good.

Immediately checked system updates and it updated to latest version of Jelly Bean (4.4 I think?) - this enabled me to setup user restricted profiles.

I've locked most of the stuff down that the boys don't need to use. Couldn't figure out why the camera icon was missing - downloaded an app from Google Play which just links to it - the original app was unlocked in profiles but wasn't displayed anywhere.

Initially put a couple of games on them to get the boys going but do need to have a proper look at them.

Thanks for all the comments and advice.
