Dreaded boost leak... yet more problems!

Featured Replies

So had this car all of 3 weeks and its starting to really **** me off now. should have stuck with my type r.

New turbo has been fitted, car has been remapped as well as I have a pd150 with 170 hybrid internals.

The top boost pipe into the egr delete pipe was one of two standard pipes left. That had a rip in it so its been changed to a silicone one. However, since that's been changed im still getting a whistle/whine on boost, and a lot of smoke too.  I have also replaced the o ring on the turbo I/c pipe and no difference.

Is it just an intercooler pipe under load that could cause this or possibly a vac pipe too? Also is there any common places to check?

Got a day on it tomorrow and if I cant find anything then a gallon of petrol and a match it is lol

FMIC or SMIC?

Time to make a boost leak tester :)

Baked bean tin, tyre valve, drill, silicone, silicone reducer and a few jubilee clips. 10 mins in B and Q and you should find everything you need mate!

probably where it meets the turbo I had mine half hr blew the turbo up on the way home fitted a new garrett pd150 lasted 3 weeks took 3 months but got my money back now got a hybrid with billet wheel from turbo dynamics no problems since just 2 boosts leaks same place right on the turbo

Ive just spent 2 hours in B&Q.... no baked beans anywhere!!! Haha :P

You have the fmic, i would have thought it would be all custom piping with silicone joiners, so cant blame the crappy oem joints.

I had a whistle and it was where the egr delete joined the intake manifold, also tightened up the blanking plate on the exhaust manifold and it solved it.

But that whistle i could hear was at the back of the engine bay and narrowed it down a bit for me.

not sure if vac lines could create a loud enough whistle for you to hear when you got foot down, but i guess it could be possible.

Really just a case of getting under it and checking all your joints and pipes, a good indicator is if you can feel any oil around any of the joints.

Ive got a FMIC with 90% of the pipework custom.

the only original pipe is the one near the turbo.

ive replaced the o-ring around it and it did have a lot of aluminium taape around it which I cleaned off.

but it seems to be the same. think im going to get the PU sealer out and bond it in.

owned quite a few turbo cars petrol and diesel and never had this many issues with boost leaks.

what turbo is it?

does it rev up ok and pull through the whole rev range under load?

have you done any logging of group 11 with vagcom

no still waiting my OBD 2 connector.

it drives and revs fine.

just hissing, smoking, down on power and returning crap MPG.

all the symptoms of a boost leak.

Problem with the original pipes is that over time the bayonets wear down and they become just crap.

look on ebay at creation motor sports bayonet coupler, then use silicone bend to connect to your existing piping.

That pipe from turbo also splits alot.

checked them out.

anyone know the correct size I need?

Im not sure off top of my head but im sure its been mentioned before on here.

Something else mentioned on here for a quick fix, is a silicone heat shrink collar, put it over joint heat it up and seems to do the trick.

i will try find link for it.

i am now on my third one of these pipes. The first split just after I had my hybrid fitted. Must have been weak and the extra boost blew a hole in it.

Cost £87 + VAT to replace it

And then just the other week my front intercooler pipe was working it's way off and this pushed the hose and connecting pipe into the driveshaft and and buffed a nice hole in it.  :wall:. Was a rather expensive bill. £101 + VAT for the boost pipe and £116 + VAT for the boost hose. So the hose has went up £20 in 2 years and 3 months.  :o

Well it's not a split hose. All checked. Also sealed the joins on the EGR blank pipe and the turbo pipe. And guess what.... Still does it.

Also checked the vag com and all it brought up was an Afm fault due to the over post I assume.

Only things I can think of is the pipe work is all oversized. Or the inlet manifold gasket is leaking.

Is there any particular place it sounds like its coming from?

Unlikely to be intake unless its been taken off recently.

When you put new turbo on did you swap over the blanking plate and gasket off the old exhaust manifold?

And also check that all the three bolts on the egr delete are tight cos the bottom one is a pain.

Just thought aswell how bad is the noise? Im no expert on the turbo you have but i know some of the hybrids whistle on boost because they spool faster.

You need to leak test it..that's how I found my cooler 90 degree pipe was leaking.

to be honest the entire hose system is rubbish and personally my car is never 100%. I've tested a handful of vrs's and they all have the weird whoosh sound under power sometimes.

All pipe work has been removed and visually checked. And replaced with new clamps. The only oem hose is the one to the turbo which has been tiger sealed in. Going to try the bean tin and tyre valve test this week. Also my MAF is brand new but keeps failing. Keeps turning the engine management light on and when reset on vagcom it comes back on within a few miles.

Was thinking as it's a new Bosch item like for like on original part. Is there an upgrade available? When I tuned my old passat tdi the maf was upgraded to a pierberg one of a 320cdi merc.

Anyone do the same on the vrs?

Right I've just spoke to a mapper regarding the car and he is saying its a possibility the injector seals are gone as this reduces the MPG and produces a lot of smoke. Strange though as the car didn't so this before turbo and map was changed.

Who changed the map?

  • Author

It was a mobile map from a company called Chiptune I think. One of my mates is a franchisee. Had it done for next to nothing.

Cant see map being a problem, ive peesonally not heard about injector seals failing but that doesnt mean its not happened before.

This problem with the maf cant be coincidence, the bosch units are normally good for a long time.

  • Author

Well it's failed so do I get a refund and get the maf mapped off or shall I sort a replacement as this one is faulty ?

I would get whoevere you bought it off to replace it. Not sure how good engine runs with it deleted. As i think the map even if it has been modified always refers back to the maf.

To have the maf mapped out would need a new map to do all calculations based on intake pressure and temperature, these are already monitored but not sure how much work is involved in getting this done.

you havent got a leak on the air intake pipe have you or around the maf? That would cause low mpg and black smoke would also cause a slight whistle depending on the hole as the vacuum is quite high.

Think I'll go for the pierberg maf equivalent. They seem to have a rock solid rep for being better across the uk and USA sites.
