lookin to blank egr but what is what in pics?

Featured Replies

can anyone help me. I'd like to blank my dads octavia tdi EGR,but i noticed theres 2 pipes going to egr area in pics. can anyone tell me what these are? which 1 is the vacuum line to egr?(i thought it was the 1 on top of egr valve, but noticed another pipe going to an actuator i think)

by the way,Im pointing to a braided hose in 2nd picture but it looks as though Im pointing to connector behind it as its a dark pic.

You plug the vacuum pipe going to the top of the EGR (pic 1). The other pipe (pic 2) is for the anti shudder valve, & should be left how it is.

Pull th epipe off in pic 1, and blank it with a screw. i would put insulating tape over the metal bit the pipe came off just in case, but its not necessary.

You might get an engine light pop up at some point in the future. This means the EGR will need to be mapped or programmed out which is easy if you have the software and cable.

i thought the eml light wouldnt come on as there's no electrical connection to EGR so nothing(i thought) to tell ecu its opening closing etc

ps:do any of you guys have your EGR's unplugged, done away with? had a few cars that ive removed egr vacuum pipes,& car ran with less lag, better mpg etc,but this is my 1st time removing egr from equation on an octy

I get an eml on my 2004 tdi with the top vacuum off, the car does run far better with no limp mode.  It just depend on the age of the car if you get a light on or not.

cheers mate. it seems that a lot of cars built around end of 2003 onwards have the ability to suss out whether EGR is producing flow etc.

has you EGR got an electrical connector attached to it as well as the vacuum pipe?

The EGR is controlled by the vacuum pipe you are going to plug. The ECU detects that the vacuum is not behaving as expected and throws the engine light on, there is no electrical connection to the EGR as you noticed.

think you have that wrong mate. Its normally the MAF/MAP flow rate etc that gives it away

the egr's with electrical connectors pick up on the valve opening thru a switch inside the EGR housing at the top itself.this is the reason a lot of cars cant be mapped out(egr) as everything is connected for flow rates etc

theres no way the ecu can know how the vacuum is drawing etc

same idea as mk3 mondeo that cant be mapped out. the flow rate from MAF/MAP and intake etc, when the egr is opened doesnt match the parameters stored in ecu,so says 'aha, this shouldnt be such n such, only fact available to it is the back up figures in ecu etc so switches on EML'

No lights for my my 2001 110TDi after I disconnected the vacuum pipe (and plugged the pipe)

Post 2003 VAG TDI's will put the EML on if you blank the EGR pipe. Had to have my EGR mapped out.

No more eml on my dti 2003,after blanking egr. Had 1 initially but forgot to reset ecu duh. My 2003 vag had eml same as you,as it also had elec connector on egr etc. Ah I long for old days of just basic cars.cars nowadays are a nightmare. Had a 308hdi and it was a terrible car because of so many sensors. Even Peugeot said diagnosing faults was hard..

My EGR doesn't have an elec connector, but the EML would keep coming back on with a EGR pipe plugged or a blanking plate fitted & clearing the code with VCDS didn't stop it.

My 2004 ASZ engined Fabia didn't throw up any warning lights after i blanked my EGR.

I just left mine entirely intact with all the vac pipes attached; I then removed the pipe which runs from the EGR to the exhaust manifold and blanked the 2 resulting holes.

I'm curious-What kinda car do you have? What engine? If an EGR has no electrical connector the ecu doesn't know at all that the egr is doing it's job. That's the same reason the euro4 engine can be blanked & the euro4 cant. Same with ford,BMW,Peugeot etc. Sure your other air inlet sensors were ok? As they can throw egr eml's.

I've never ever heard of a non sensor type egr throwing an egr eml before.

The code i get is P0401 EGR Flow Insufficent, it gives the same code if it's blanked and vacuum still connected.  They are easily mapped out, I'm having mine done this week

As per my sig A4 B6 130 Sport & the engine is an AVF. I know from my membership of some Audi forums that post 2003 Audi TDI's throw an EGR insufficient flow fault code if the EGR is blanked off or the EGR pipe is plugged. Some how the ECU must meter the EGR flow, but I couldn't work out where.

This one has my juices going lol. Didn't it make you wanna find out how it detected your egr was blanked etc ? If it was me,I'd want to know lol

Well I knew there was a possibility the ECU would throw a code with EGR blanked off & if it did I would have to get the EGR written out. Yes it's odd as it's vacuum operated, but it seems to be the case across the Audi A4 & VW Passat B6 TDI's post late 2003.

I had a 55 plate Mondeo ST TDCI Euro 3 that I blanked off the EGR without issue, but my mate has the same car but Euro 4 with the electronic EGR, & he did the same as me but his EML is permanently on.
