  • I'd remove the EGR valve to see if it's clogged up. Can drastically affect MPG if it's clogged up!   I made a guide on how to remove it to clean it!   Here

  • This!   Someone the other day was asking me how the hell I got an indicated 80mpg on the obc then started going about how he lost an audi RS something in the bends the other day..

45 MPG in winter is OK. Strong winds also play a part as does warm up time during colder months.

I've had my fabia vrs just over a month and covered nearly 5k, mostly morotway miles sitting at 70, and a bit of driving round London at night so not very busy. The most ive been able to get is an average of 50mpg, normally sits around 47/48 mpg. I too expected better figures as i'm driving sensibly, for a change. seem to get bang on 400 miles per tank without using the expansion tank. Not sure if this is normal or not though?

Who did the remap? couldnt they delete the egr at the same time? Just using blanking plates will put your management light on

They deleted it in the map but I felt like mechanically deleting it too for peace of mind. But yeah the brakes are sticking in my mind. Gonna pop by tomorrow. Probably new calipers? That's gotta hurt the mpg

I am not an expert on brakes but I wouldn't expect to hear any noise like that when pushing the car forwards or backwards. Do the front discs get noticeably hot when driving normally?

Spoke to the dealer today as I have some temperamental window switches and the brakes seem a bit "hard work" to get any real bite.

He says that kind of drag is normal due to stuff in the diff which he described as a big spring or something - but he's gonna check them out when it goes in for the window switches. Does sound a lot like brakes to me though, maybe I'll jack Dad's octavia up and do a like for like comparison

It does roll ok in neutral though. =/

Quite an oily mess around the intercooler lower pipe though - best way to fix this with minimum cost/effort? May just get them to do that under warranty too

It's just the seals on the inter cooler pipes. Easy fix and thinks the seals are around 4 quid

For motorway driving having cruise control fitted and sitting at 65mph has done wonders for my mpg.

I was getting low 50's, with cruise control I was getting low 60's. Dont know the "real" figures but they are higher either way :D

I filled my car to the brim including the exp tank last Monday and the fuel light came on today at 499miles. Dont know if this is good or bad really.

First fill up whilst tracking using an app on my phone gave me 40mpg overall. Not what I was hoping for. Got 450 miles practically empty. And that was on shell vpower. Put in 50l of supermarket today. Lets see how it goes.

Garage fixed intercooler seals for me and reassembled the brakes as I felt they were pants - strangely mpg now seems a bit worse tbh and the brakes have even less bite. When I get a moment I'll have another vcds session:

  • boost
  • timing / syncho angle
  • coolant and fuel temps

And that's whilst driving aiming to get mpg

Seems strange to get such poor mpg...

On my commute over the last 2 weeks (new owner BLT engine, 56 plate), i'm getting over 70mpg. Record was testerday, 82.5mpg (over 25 miles, motorway 90% driven at 45-60 mph). Incredibly frugal, however the real test will be when I fill the thing up to the top and calculate what i'm getting to a tank. For the record, I've Redex'd it twice and it has improved economy. There's nothing wrong with cleaning the maf with contact cleaner, it was the first thing I did when I took delivery of mine. And i've changed the oil, oil filter, air filter & fuel filter last week.

I think what you're looking for is the right way, is it the earlier ASZ engine though? These are likely less mpg than the BLT version... 50-55 most likely from ASZ's. BLT's are 60+mpg for those that drive like Vicars.

You could have clogged injectors, the spray pattern could be a little deformed and not misting. Take one out and have a look... or you could test them one by one in a clear 2 ltr soft drink bottle whilst the engine is on. I've seen this on Wheeler Dealers, where Ed tests injectors on a mad Range Rover 3ltr diesel (BMW M57 engine).

I'm not that mechanically skilled to be honest with you. But I have given things a try.

My mpg on the computer was 43, calculated brim to brim was 40mpg. I've used a bottle of forte diesel treatment and a full tank of vpower.

oil and air filter was done before collection by dealer - not sure about fuel filter though, can this affect mpg?

oil level is fine. ASZ engine yes, my mates golf which is ASZ gets awesome mpg no matter how he drives.

Been meaning to give the maf a clean but it seems to drive fine - ill do it anyway though. Anyway to test the injector with vcds?

You haven't even changed the fuel filter?! Of course it can, if you've had a poor batch of fuel and it's totally clogged it up then your mpg will be well down! I had a similar problem in my Ford Focus tdci last year.

I've found the biggest single contributor to poor MPG in all of my cars so far has been..........

Problem is I would usually do the service myself so I know whats been done, but the dealer did it for me before I collected the car.

Maybe I'll ask if they did it, and have a quick look through the service history - might as well just buy one myself - they ain't much are they

Remember that dealers can often use sh*te oil, they love saving money.

Change it ASAP. If you drive with a bit of toe flexing torque in a remapped vrs, you'll be around 40ish mpg

Incredibly frugal, however the real test will be when I fill the thing up to the top and calculate what i'm getting to a tank.

Let us know what the mpg is once you have done that test. i have been logging the fuel consumption of my BLT-engined vRS for the past 6 years during which time it has averaged 46.32 mpg over 58300 miles. The Trip 1 and 2 mpg readouts on my car typically need reducing by 25% to arrive at a realistic figure. Typically, when I refuel the Trip 2 mpg figure is circa 60mpg whereas the actual figure is around 46mpg..

I wondered where my wife aka SWMBO had been most evenings! Lmao!

By the way, 82mpg? A big dose of 'hmmmmn' on that one perhaps, 90% driven at 45-60mph, let's hope that was through roadworks, and not your general driving style!

SWMBO has had both engine codes on 3 different vRS Fabias, and despite me doing my impersonation of Morgan Freeman in 'Driving Miss Daisy' I've never got close to that; yes on the trip meter but real world, brim-to-brim? Nah. Best I've managed is early 70's..

Changed the fuel filter to a genuine one today and cleaned the maf with electrical contact cleaner - couldn't get it out to soak in a sandwich bag as I don't have the stupid security screw bit but should have done the job either way

Changed the fuel filter and as said before sprayed contact cleaner into the maf (with it off the car!)

Drove steady last night, 1 hour drive of 60/70mph in 5th and 6th fetched me 51mpg overall. Not too bad - just still feels to be lacking the power lower down so I can't just feather the throttle else I lose speed. Thinking about getting an EGR delete pipe as I think the EGR valve is leaking boost even though its blanked off with plates.

May get VCDS on it again today given the chance. Thats using the trip computer of course. I have to keep calm and rely on brim to brim method - although its important to make sure I use all of the expansion tank else it will throw me mpg way out

Update - looked on vcds this morning. These were at idle.

Synchro angle thingy was bouncing happily between 0.0 and -0.6 rarely hitting -1.0 so thats ok

Coolant and temp needle warm up quickly so its not thermostat or CTS

MAF specified was 800, maf actual 400 at idle so i think this is normal - will do a WOT later where the actual should be around 1000+ I do believe

I'll also do a boost test at WOT later for the hell of it.

The injector timings seem a bit weird, I have a screenshot unless its nothing to worry about - cylinder 1 was like -60, cylinder 2 was 0, cylinder 3 was +10 and cylinder 4 like -40 i think??

Another fill up. 42 mpg (calculated not using the trip computer but brim to brim)  this time. Gave it an italian tuneup on sort just in case my erratic driving isn't enough. Drove a 30min journey in 3rd gear! Once warmed up of course. mmmmm
