Auto-dim wing mirror glass - broke mine, what options?

Featured Replies

Bought a 2005 Oktavia Laur&Klem 1.6 FSI three weeks ago, broke righthand wing-mirror auto-dim glass yesterday. Distraught.  Especially on finding that a new auto-dim replacement costs around £290 plus VAT.  My mechanic got hold of a non-dim replacement glass but it doesn't fit.   Can anyone tell me please if I can get hold of a non-dim replacement glass that will fit?

The alternative appears to be to replace the whole unit with a non-dim version - second-hand prices starting around £60, not too bad.  Any recommendations?
I read on a previous thread (which I can't find) that the auto-dim glass is no longer fitted and at that price I can see why.  My mechanic said the only car he knew that now had them was a Merc.  I said if I had wanted to buy a car with Merc-style spare part costs I would have done so.   Obviously I didn't spot this problem when I bought the Oktavia.

Is that 290 for the whole thing or just the glass?

My Audi has these. £200 per side GLASS ONLY!!

Mine are not broken but I priced them up anyway just so I'd

know how much care to take with them. Lots is the answer :p

Trouble is they are bloody good and I've gotten used to having them now.

I'd bite the bullet and get the right one myself.

But I would moan like f**k about the expense though.

My 2004 Audi A8 has the auto dim mirrors, you can source third party dimming mirrors from ebay for less than £70 new. I am looking to replace mine with standard mirrors as well since both mine are stuck in the dimmed mode.

There are several different shaped mirrors on the MK2 Octavia, you need to make sure he ordered the ones for a pre facelift and not the facelift version as the mirror is very different.

Thanks for that advice Mannyo.  After I did an online search a supplier called me and assured me that the replacement glass would fit my 2005 model.  Cost is £21.60.  I didn't know about pre- or post-facelift - how can I tell which version my Oktavia is?

Will post again when I get the glass  and I see if it fits.

In reply to grr66, that price - £291 plus VAT - was for the glass only!   You can buy the entire fitting for £60-odd without the auto-dim glass.

Just went to ebay and the replacement glass is £325!  So no bargains there.

Auto dimming door mirrors were only fitted to L&K models. So you should easily be able to buy non auto dimming (but heated) mirror glass from the dealer and fit that. On 2005 models the auto dim and non auto dim mirrors are the same shape, so the standard mirror should fit your car just fine.

Standard mirror glass is about £55 from the dealer.

I made a bid long time ago for that mirror on german ebay but without success. Also that mirror is used so you cannot be sure about its true condition. Another thing is that its a right side mirror but for passanger side. Driver side mirror has close to the end a line and a more convex glass, but maybe it can fit on right driver side octy if that is the only difference.

Mine right mirror got some brown haze at the bottom and its spreading up so I am also looking for the new one, but the price here in Croatia is also high. Its 300eur only for the glass. Same price is also in other close countries like Austria, Slovenia...

Got a replacement non-dim mirror glass from Wingmirrorman.  Cost was approx. £22 including postage.  Replaced glass in a few minutes.  Thanks to all for advice.

Sadly I also have to replace the mirror cover. More fun and games as you apparently can't buy the correct colour - have to buy a standard cover and have it painted.  Any advice?  Anyone know differently?

Thanks again

This is correct. As it's quite a small area, you can spray it yourself with reasonable results, although some colours are are less forgiving than others when spraying at home from a can. It might be worth trying to source a second hand mirror cover in your colour.....it will be cheaper and will save the hassle of spraying a new one.
