service interval on vRs

Featured Replies

Had my vRS 12 months now from new & enjoying ownership greatly. Being used to annual servicing on other cars i called local Skoda dealer up to get booked in. Oh dear not so simple as car is on variable servicing and not due for another 290 days or 10900 miles. OK so I've only done 4500 miles but I think it's reasonable to want an oil & filter change.

If I go ahead with it now I have to have it changed over to fixed servicing which also apparently means 10w 30 oil instead of the 5w long life stuff I'm using. Justification being fixed service= £130 vs variable of £230 I.e. oil costs 100 quid ??? Strange they sold me 5l of quantum for £30. I questioned the logic of not being able to just get a simple task done without messing with the oil type so was told the master technician would be consulted.

Anyhow, after sleeping on it the guy on the service desk called me back & assured me my warranty is fine as long as I don't go over 20000 miles or 2 years ( or obviously the maxi dot display).

I'm interested to know what service intervals other vRS drivers are on particularly CTHE engines. I'm tempted to leave it but it strikes me as odd particularly as the same guy said I should top up my coolant reservoir with tap water and only go back if it drops again. It's 1cm below min when hot. As a low milage user I' not too freaked but it seems like poor service from what I've had elsewhere.

Many thanks for reading

I was told last week that the VRS as sold currently is only a fixed annual service jobbie. Maybe that's one of the changes with the new engine?

With your low annual mileage (I do roughly the same) it shouldn't be on variable - I'd get it switched to fixed. Disappointingly poor advice from the dealer.

I'm CTHE and am on 14k.. my "code" in the book is variable service, and my service indicator hadn't come on, but I took it in at 10k anyway (I do aboyt 15-18k a year) and they simply did a 10k "fixed" service for me, no issues, i could go longer and pay more for , lets say a 16k service when the computer says so, but i think I'm just going to do the oil/filter change every 10k, and plugs 40k maybe brake fluid ect , whatever satisfys the warrenty :) my dealer were easy either way!

There is a mix up and it is not being cleared up.

the Quantum Long Life lll costs well under £40.

Under £30 at some Dealership on the Service Invoice.

They were fixed Servicing, they still are fixed servicing, but they were given the code for Variable Servicing and oil changes as the Maxidot shows.

Fixed or Variable servicing, they still leave the Factory with Long Life Oil,

and every car i have seen gets Long Life Oil marked on the Invoice. Does not mean thats what is put in.

The price difference is nowt.

Brake Fluid is 3 years then each 2 years, but obviously can be done before 3 years,

easy enough to test the Brake Fluid for the Technician, or anyone.

Cheaper than this easily available,

funny that Participating Dealers can be more expensive than none participaing.

Small Print, For those on Fixed Servicing.

Maybe it would be intersting to know *exactly* what oil those units that have ultimately failed have had in them.

Well thats not Difficult.

Castrol or Quantum in most cases,

and other Fully Synthetic 5w 30 or 5w 40 oils.   What were you thinking might be in them.

Its is Bore Wash and Engine Components that are the Issue, no question of issues with the oil used.

It is just a 1.4 TSI Base Engine, but with Twincharging and a minimum 132 kW - 136 kW

Interesting, thanks - what kinds of driving conditions are most associated with bore wash in this engine?

Driving the car away from the dealership,

and then using it as a passenger vehicle on various roads in various countries, from the UK to Australia.

Ha, well apart from that.... surely excess fueling is most likely to occur with a cold engine? And of course turbos are especially vulnerable in this respect, I just wonder whether 'giving it some' before the oil is really up to temperature (I mean 10 miles motoring or more) might really be a significant factor.

Lol indeed!

I think I'll get the 12 month service booked then and see what oil it comes back with. I forgot to mention when I called dealer I mentioned having put 3 litres of oil in and was told "those engines were designed to use oil". Strange USP, mind I laughed for the temerity of it

I will not link the many threads,  there are a couple of good recent ones,  2 members here that only last week had it confirmed they are getting new engines.

1 CAVE & 1 CTHE engine from 2013.

but really they 'Skoda Dealerships' need to stop saying they all do that. Or high oil use is normal, it is not.

More than 0.5 litres used in 621 miles and you pull them up,

near that much with normal driving and they are having a laugh,

I have a May 2013 vrs on variable - I will only have covered about 5,000 miles by May 2014 but will be taking the car in for a service and getting it changed to fixed. I have spoken to my local Skoda dealer and they are able to do the service for only 59 pounds which includes VAT and parts ( oil filter and plug) but not oil. I will bring 4 litres of Castrol Edge 5w 30 with me to the service at a cost of 28 pounds.

So for a total cost of 79 pounds I get a first service, oil change to quality oil and the all important stamp in the book.

Happy with this and happy to be on fixed as these engines deserve an oil change at 5,000 miles

Maths not good. - 88 pounds

Or 87 !!!!!!

The thing is the first Minor Service was only £85 or so with them doing Long Life Oil when you got a Dealers 20% off Loyalty Voucher with a new car,

& £110 was expensive for all that gets done.

Or got done,  if the cars gets the stuff on the National Pricing Schedule, Road Test, Diagnostic, Software Enhancement,

then fair enough.

But Skoda seem to have forgot to tell the Technicians,

or maybe they only called ex Actors that are called Barry to let them know.

Paying for them to ruin your paint/wax and vacuum your car seems like a waste to me.

Quotes now from Skoda Dealerships for Minor & Major Services is getting ridiculous.

Mine is Nov 12 and I got 3 years free servicing.

The dealership set the dash display for 10k miles/1 year and when the first service was done long life oil was put in,so a win/win as I would see it,since I'm not paying for it.

Not only that but I also did an interim oil/filter change at 5k miles and will do another one shortly as 15k miles comes up.

The oil gets dirty quite quickly so I feel I'm doing the best I can to preserve the engine.

Oil consumption has stabilised at about 2500 miles per litre...could be better, could be worse.

Thats interesting. I'd be happy with 2500m/l to be honest. What were you using before it stabilised?

TBH it's probably never been much different to that since new,but I don't keep an exact check.

I got my new vRS estate on the 1st March last year but it's not warning me that a service is due. I went into the Service menu on the MFD and it says that the service is due in less than 30 days. Previous VAG cars have warned me when I switch the ignition on.

I would be expecting it to tell you about now.

It was probably set on the PDI last year at 372 Days or 9,400 miles.

(they may have done it wrong when changing from showing Variable Servicing Period)

How many miles have you done?

Just over 6000. I've not been well this year and have been working from home a lot so have done far less than I expected. I've been doing a lot more town driving than I expected, too. I've had to add about 1.5 litres of oil since new.

Thats nothing really on the oil considering running in.

Take care, and all the best now.

Thanks - yeah, I'm not really concerned about the oil, although it's the first VAG  that I've ever had to top up at all between services :)

But you probably never had a 1390 cc engine that could produce 180 ps before .
