Mk1 VRS Exhaust Flexi-Pipe Woes - Repair needed

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I have trawled the forums but failed to find an answer...

The Flexi-pipe on my exhaust has all-but broken away from the rigid pipe - I'm not 100% if its broken on the Turbo or Cat end, if you get my drift.

My usual trustworthy mechanic (DSB, Bulwell, Nottingham) suggested welding it as a fix a few months ago when it was a little crack. But now its totally gone, he isn't confident in taking it off and welding it himself, so would suggest I find somewhere else, or I'm looking at a replacement.

The replacement is silly money as it includes the Cat  :(

I'm in Nottingham and so Dave at DSB suggested Big-City Tyres in the town centre, who sucked air in through their teeth and said that they couldn't (be arsed to?) weld it, but offered to sell me a flexi-pipe.

It was a busy weekend, so that may have skewed their opinion.

Does anyone have any tips/suggestions for garages/exhaust places in Nottingham/Nearby that are likely to be happy to weld in a new flexi-section?

I'm not really up for an ebayed fat downpipe and decat, or anything like that.

Alternatively, does anyone know where I might get a sensibly priced replacement part, or if anyone has one in their garages gathering dust?

Cheers Chaps,

Jono

I've got two new custom made flexi joints going in my Audi, they are being installed by Audivsc in Harrow (London). You can get clamp in ones, simply cut the old one out and replace with clamped version. On the MK1 vRS they are pre-cat and lambda, so the leak will be affecting your fuel economy.

Sorry not in that area but have had mine welded up so repair is possible, remove the wire meshie bit to reveal the flexi, and weld

Speak to your local stainless installer and get a price for replacing the flexi bit with a stainless flexi bit. I did that on a previous Toyota previa as they used to destroy themselves.

The only issue with the flex on our standard pipes is its very close to flange so would be difficult to cut out and fit a slotted one in place,

Stick a post in wanted section am sure somebody must have one as there is plenty been broken up in for sale section,

Unfortunatly welding seems to be a dying art nowerdays, ive just moved garages and out of a team of 8 i'm the only one that can weld and im far from been am expert at it and i can only do it because i bought a welder and just played with it until i got the knack of it

I know what you mean, I am lucky that my local guy was ex raf mechanic and used to make is own tools etc when needed. He's retired now but thankfully his son has taken over and he has the same sort of skills as his old man :D

I could send you a whole used downpipe inc the cat for £40.   Depends which angle of attack you want and if you want to keep the current DP/cat you have now.

Devonutopia - is it the original part or an aftermarket pipe+cat?

I just want to be sure there won't be any fitting issues.

If it is, then yes, that'd be awesome!

Yep, totally original / standard as mk1 octy Vrs

Splendid, I'll take it! Thank you very much.

Do you want to drop me a line on [email protected] and I can ebank cash and give you my address etc!

Email sent, I think.

Aaaaaand sold for 40 pounds!

Not yet. :)   But I have someone locally who is offering me cash to collect, so I am not sure it will be available now. :(

Downpipe with cat at 40 pounds is steal.Where I live only the cat is 80 pounds

I could only get £26 scrapping it, so anything above that is a bonus.

So, Its finally all fixed and I no longer feel so anti-social when accelerating hard. Having said that, part of me missed the pops and burbles on overrun...

Big thankyou to Jason for sorting me out the part!
