Gearbox input shaft

Featured Replies

What are the signs of a input shaft failure (excessive play in shaft)

My car creeps forward in first gear even with the clutch down, been advised it could be this

Any thoughts?

Thanks

It's your slave cylinder / master cylinder.

New slave cylinder was fitted with the helix setup in April 2013, master was fitted few months ago, new gearbox mount also fitted, also poly bush dogbone mount, full fluid flush, idle speed also changed. Clutch is going back to helix for testing, although it might not be the clutch that's causing the issue. I know you have to rev it out of gear sometimes with the SMF but this isn't re. that IMO. A gearbox rebuild garage have test driven it and think its defo not a gearbox related issue.

I've made about 4/5 threads on this now but still no closer to a resolution, even when the gearbox is out, any ideas on what else is left to check?

Feeling :-/ Almost a year of having it installed now, the thought of spending all the £ and to be in this situation :-|

Have you tried having the clutch re-bleed?

I hear what your saying, could well be a faulty slave/master cylinder.

Depends who fitted them also, could have been damaged if not bled properly.

All work carried out at a very reputable garage

Yep clutch has been bled 3 times now : (

I've been told by my local neighbour who rebuilds gearboxes it could be the input shaft

As mentioned above, I have a feeling it could be premature slave cylinder failure. Anyway of testing this though? other than buying a new one and fitting it. As you can imagine taking the gearbox out isn't a quick job, want to make sure all potential options are considered and covered/checked.

Thanks guys

I can't see it being the input shaft bearings unless you have a loud whine too, sounds like clutch drag to me possibly a bent drive plate from poor gearbox fitting or maybe a faulty pressure plate that is not level, if it is the master cyl it will creep harder and harder as the pressure goes out of the system when it is held down..

my guess is the gearbox was allowed to hang on the splines when fitting and it has slightly bent the drive plate so it drags all the time.

if you do get it out, stick the drive plate on the input shaft and spin it see if it runs true.

Yep checked for clutch drag multiple times never done it once. Also, if drive plate was bent, surely it would cause the issue all the time? Whereas mine is intermittent : (

I would try a re-bleed, you need quite an alarming amount of pressure to bleed them properly. If the bearings on the first motion shaft were gone it would whine or chatter quite badly at idle.

Ah ok, will have to try again I suppose, yep no whine or chatter (other than the usual smf transmission noise).

Weird thing to note, when going down hill (engine facing down), this appears to aggravate it as the brake pedal is pressed. Not sure how braking affects it? I know they share the same master cylinder, but that's been changed a couple months ago - made no difference at all

They don't share the same master cylinder, the clutch master cylinder is attached to the pedal box, but they do share the same reservoir for the fluid, if there is an airlock or any bubbles in either system they can affect each other in strange ways too.

FYI for anyone who has a similar issue with creep in first gear.

I had 4mm play in the input shaft, gear box rebuilt and the creep in first gear has been sorted.

Only took a year to get to the bottom of it lol

Not saying the above applies to everybody, but just so you know, it's another factor to consider

Ive the same problem. Just out of interest how much was your gearbox rebuild?

  • Author

I paid £200 at mates rate for the rebuild

£150 labour from the garage to remove and refit the gearbox

£35 for a new slave cylinder (I had a new one fitted even though mine was a year old)
