is a de cat now a mot failure

Featured Replies

hi, i was gonna de cat my fabia vrs but have recently heard it is now a mot failure, is this so?

Decats have always been MOT failures. Apparently diesels are only tested for smoke not emissions (please correct me if I'm wrong).

However a cat not being present on a car which left the factory with one; would equate to a fail.

yes, it will be a failure on visual inspection irrespective of wether it passes the smoke test or not if the dpf is removed

Yes

No

Maybe

That's it all covered so i will be right on on of them I guess.

Also Tom he asked about the cat not dpf ;)

If DFP and Cat are missing, and can be seen to be missing yes.

If the externals are there, we just dont know YET.

If you sell a car with both removed then thats an offense.

Arse won't be long til I get my ass into gear and get my new turbo fitted. BUT I have bought a Milltek decat downpipe to go with my Milltek cat back exhaust, do I just fit it.

Or is it worth selling on and getting a sportscat downpipe to be on the safe side.

Depends if the garage put the car on the ramps to do a full inspection, I know of some that don't...

Yes.

Spoke to my brother who is doing his MOT course at the moment, yes its an auto fail along with signs of tampering..

Sorry, but they are there for a reason. You might love them or hate them but the are a necessity.

Always a failure on a petrol, not a derv until now.

That has just been brought in Feb this year,DPF or cat missing where fitted as standard is now a fail.

.

It states DPF OR cat are missing :)

You can normally smell the difference also. Don't forget, MOTs are done inside so fumes will be more concentrated. OK they do have ventilation, but the smell is completely different and the MOTS computer will hold information on if it should have a DPF or Cat.

you can smell a hot cat on a petrol, not a diesel.

That's interesting, what if you inform the buyer? Does that cover you?

As I'm aware it is OK (in the loosest sense of the word) to sell a 'clocked' car, if you inform the buyer that the milage is incorrect. If you withhold this information, then its an offence and a pretty ****ty one at that.

Iv found the Milltek hi flow cat/ downpipe for £315 anybody know of anywhere cheaper?

It's put my plans back now great!

Wife's going to kill me lol.

I wish, the Vehicle Specific Information (VSI) is quite general at the moment, hopefully next year when the computer systems are overhauled, testers will have the information that they need to conduct a proper test.

was told last week "only on 2010 on"    news to me but it was from a tester

I would look in to a custom job lee.

At least one tester has posted in this thread, as far as I am aware if the car left the factory with Cat and / or DPF then they must be present for the test otherwise its a fail.

I run an m.o.t centre if the vehicles cat or dpf is missing then yes its a fail if its there but hollow :) then it will pass

Nope, its still an offence AFAIU

I wonder how that would affect people who have informed their insurance of the 'mod'? Considering you're formally stating that you have made a change to your car that will cause it to fail an MOT? Otherwise you're not going to declare it and you're risking your policy if they find out?

99% of insurers won't insure de-cats,they only allow cat back exhaust system changes. :)
