I've had my vrs just over a year now and I've had no problems with the 7 speed box, but recently I've noticed it seems to be slipping the clutch in 2nd before changing into 3rd.. It's never done it before, I think a few people on here have had the clutch packs changed, I'm not sure what to do about it or if there is anything I can do.

Yes see a specialist and find out if there is a fault/problem.

 

How many miles and how old, and is it covered by Warranty.

If it is covered by Warranty, sadly you will not get to see a Specialist just a Skoda Dealership.

Yeah it's got warranty but it's ford's 'jen care' so I'll have to dig out and read the small print.

If not I'll have to find a VAG specialist

Hopefully the warranty you have covers major component failures, if no previous known fault.

It would be pretty useless if it did not.

 

Make sure what the Warranty says, and follow the procedure, get the permission to proceed

and you might well be better off being able to have a Specialist Diagnosis and do any Warranty work.

the box can slip clutches, it can choose to do this in second instead of using forst ect , like someone driving a manual would, if youoverheat the box, it will even slip clutches deliberatly if you ignore the warnings to slow you down

 

BUT as George says , get it checked out they should run 150k no issues though.

Well they should run 150,000 miles, but VAG only put Warranties up to 100,000 in some countries.

 

The ones in Twinchargers that have failed and needed Clutch Packs and complete gearboxes replaced have obviously not got near to lasting 3 years and there are a few of those now, thankfully very few though.

I heard from a skoda master tech, the DSG-7 is the most reliable they have done yet..... I'm glad I have it nstead of , say the new 6-speed from renault, be interesting to see what happens with that! (press saying "not as good as the VAG boxes...")

 

to be fair though George, if I keep my car, i will probably do a clutch pack replacement (and oil change) at 100k, just to be safe

It can need adjustment in my experience, the Skoda garage had one of mine hooked up to a remote technician (apparently) and it was back to imperceptibly after that :-)

There can be a software update done on the DQ200 as fitted to the Twincharger, if that is what you mean.

 

If the Mechatronic Control Unit or Clutch Pack needs replacing, then thats what gets done.

When the DQ250 6 speed wet clutch was launched back in 2005 the failure rates were poor.It took VAG several years to iron out the mechatronic problems. Several markets lost confidence with the box and VAG were forced into offering 100k mile warranties.

VAG USA now say the DQ250 is more reliable than their own conventional auto's and manual boxes.

 

The newer DQ200 7 speed dry clutch didn't suffer the same mechatronic issues (Lesson learnt) but the dry clutch units don't seem to be as robust as the wet clutch units. I tow with our DQ250 equipped car and the clutches will happily slip and slur all day, on another forum I use it seems pretty common for owners who tow with the dry clutch DSG's to experience overheating and other clutch issues. I hardly notice any slip with out DQ200 Fabia but that's only a 1.2TSi so hardly stressing it. One thing for sure is slip on a dry clutch = wear and heat, I'd be concerned with excessive noticable slip on a dry clutch DSG.

 

The Renault box is a Getrag design. Getrag having been doing dual clutch boxes since 2008 and the transverse engine boxes are used by Ford and Volvo.

But if Renault are wiring it up or building it I'd be worried.

Sy has run the fabia 7-speed dry clutch with 250 bhp and similar upgraded torque with no issues, MOSTLY track work.... I have put mine on the track many times, without issues..only time I've ever seen the overheating mesage was when a member was doing repeated (and I mean repeated) standing starts on full throttle on a dry road.... think this would heat most clutches.....

Horses for courses, and there is always going to be upgrades available if the demand is there.

Quick update.

It seems to have stopped slipping from 2nd to 3rd, I'll still keep a close eye on it mind.

It must have heard the threat.

More of an observation than anything else...

 

in "Start-stop" traffic yesterday the DSG seemed to be slipping the clutch in 2nd gear when slowing to a stop more than usual. Only lasted a few minutes and not done it since.

 

Objectively, the box will work to the parameters picked-up by the sensors and programming but, subjectively, any changes in its usual 'behaviour' are usually noticed.

That's pretty common. I've seen Land Rover, Jaguar and Bentley all claim to be fitting their new 8 speed auto's when they use the ZF8HP that is fitted by nearly everyone else offering an 8 speed auto on a longitudinal engine layout.

 

Getrag are a little different as they do license the design to be built by actual manufacturers or third parties. Not sure what agreement Renault have.

In my case notchy changes, especially one-to-two, we're completely resolved by a remote technician adjusting some settings, (no mechanical work done).

That will have been a software update then!

No, it wasn't an update that cured it, that was tried first.

My Scirocco (1.4 twincharger & DSG) used to like slipping 2nd gear on slow turns (like into my road) - it would hardly ever go down to 1st even when crawling and with it being a slow turn and slightly uphill, it would decide to slip the clutch in 2nd.  Started juddering after about 40k (although I could never replicate it when taking it in) but the Fabia (with a slightly lower final drive ratio) doesn't suffer the same problem - takes the same corner in 2nd with no problem or slipping.

On the way to work today I hit a dreaded pothole! Shook the car quite violently! Moments later I lost all transmission, engine still running! No warning lights came on maxi dot said I was in D4 still! Pulled over with Hazards on! Drivers behind must have thought what the?? I was wondering is this the VW DSG problem loss of power etc!

So did I, I put it in N and red elected D! Then everything seemed to work again after a few moments!

Well sort of thing is the car now seems different it feels more jerky the D gears seem to be held onto longer! A bit more jerky! Do DSG gearboxes 'learn'??

Has anyone else had this phenomenon?? Any suggestions?

I'd probably take it in to the dealer to be looked at in that situation. I'd want to rule out any gearbox damage from the impact.
