Brake caliper leaking-- quoted

Featured Replies

Hello,

I had the bleeping handbrake signal flashing on my dashboard, took car to Skoda and they report back

it requires a full set of break pads and a new rear brake caliper, the old is leaking brake fluid they quoted £421.52

( £78 was for the diagnostic check)

Am just looking for advice if this is a good price... i only recently just spent £278 on work in the last month :-(

The car starting to cost and only purchased in aug 13

In addition the car had warranty work carried out by skoda due to abs light staying on and it was a recall issue

does this have any bearing on the faulty caliper ???  ( this was done by previous owner)

sorry for the questions am not really clued up with skoda yet, a bit strap of cash till payday so have to drive the misses citioren c1 ( you can see why am disappointed lol )

Kindest Regards,

Stephen

Thats a awful lot of money for brake pads front & rear & a brake caliper,is there a local independant garage near to you that you could use instead? they should be able to do that job for half that price.

The flashing handbrake symbol should be your signal to stop, it means the brake fluid level has dropped well below the minimum. Brake fluid only drops if there is a leak, the red symbol means requires immediate attention.

The price sounds OK for a main dealer, you may shave a little of the labour price elsewhere but the parts should all come from the same place wherever you go.

Pagid oe spec pads from euro carparts will be a minimum 50%  cheaper than main dealer parts.

Well you can get two refurbed rear callipers for £180 and then a full set of pads from £30-40. Easy job to do yourself as well.

But its a few hours work so can see why the dealers are quoting what they are

cool, my previous mechanic said £50 plus parts, where do you get them calipers ?? Ive seen one on car parts 4 less £118 get £12 back if return old one

Any other places and what are the best brakes pads, i think i get a full service soon aswell, shes appearing a little run down with all this work am doing.. however i m saving to get the pdf remove by shark performance, i wish other things would stop getting in way lol

Thanks for replies and any further advice much grateful, now if only i could get my insurance down hmmmm lol

the old caliper is leaking brake fluid......hmmmmmm

Never heard of a caliper doing this, normally its the lines or i just needs a rebuild with new seals and a piston....

to do it yourself its an easy job

tyre off, loose the banjo bolt, a few holding bolts slip it off take off put new one on.

bleed the system, but for £50 id just take it to the garage to be honest. Then again i hate working on cars

Oh don't mind paying the £50 plus he did great work on my last car

I was just trying to keep the service and work with skoda to keep service history

But I don't think it will matter by the time am ready to sell lol

As for me doing it, I struggle getting tyre off lol

Changing Interior or simple filters or battery's no problem

But brakes and tyres stuff na I rather pay for it!!

Mine just had a failed rear caliper, seized on whilst on the M25. Over £580 of damage (New Caliper and rear discs and pads). Lucky for me Skoda covered 90% as goodwill jesture even though out of warranty period.

How come Skoda where willing to cover it ??

Am only asking cos the car did come with worked carried out by skoda recently and that was to do with brakes ( will need to dig paperwork out )

I suppose there's no harm in asking :)

Cheers

Customer loyality, it's my 4th skoda, I currently own two. Father, uncle and aunt have a skoda. I simply stated as a loyal customer I've never be so disappointed as I was that a caliper failed and the car wasn't even 4 years old and only 28k miles.

If you don't ask you don't get.
