Knocking noise from rear damn FK coilovers

Featured Replies

Well the FK streetline's fitted a while now and they're great car handles well, not to harsh but I've got a knock from the rear with people on the back. It's OK with just 1 or 2 people in the front but with the kids in it boings, knocks over bumps when cornering, speed doesn't make a difference but it's defo a spring noise. When I was at the tyre fitters today I noticed this,

as you can see the top pig tail is rubbing on the next coil down. With the wheels on and the car on the ground the top 4 coils after the pigtail, all touch so there is less bend than in the pics. The thing that really pi$$es me off is that I'm not running super low or even that low as I need to keep the car practical. Surely this shouldn't be rubbing and making that kind of noise? Has anyone had this kind of problem on coilovers. Is there a chance the springs are not designed for the octy and are actually golf springs?  Just a bit miffed as the car drives well but cant live with knocks and bangs all the time.

I have same issue with my joms and now the pigtails are starting to open up and knock on the body of car as they won't sit on top bush properly,

When will suspension companies realise the octy isn't the same as a golf and has alot more weight hanging over the rear end

this sucks mate think I'll get in touch with Damian at DPM coz I'm not having it get f£$^king worse.

Mine as the plus ones they don't make anymore aswell, wish id of paid the 60 quid extra and bought the weitecs,

I went for the FK's over the pro sports and the JOM's as they were a bit more cash and looked a better product. Should have got the pro sports an save £35.  :wall:

Did your JOMS come with the ARB mounting point?

Well tracked down the problem and as volvomeg said the top coil on the O/S/R has opened up and dropped the height by 1cm so knocks on the body and rubs on the lower coil. The other side has started to do the same. To say I'm pi$$ed is an understatement, they've only been on for 1 month :wall:  also if you look at the pic of the rear spring perch you can see I'm not running low at all. Gunna send these pics to Damian a DPM this is not the kind of quality I was expecting I mean do FK make these springs out of chocolate or what? :giggle:

This is the good spring note the measurement - 6.8 cm

This is the stretched side - 7.2 CM

See how the top coil on the stretched spring is rubbing on the next coil down causing a serious noise :@

This is the good spring - 22.9 cm

This is the bad spring - 22.4 cm

I know its only 5 mm but when it's got the car on it it sits 1 cm lower than the other side and knocks like mad. Like I said not running low this is the spring perch.

This is a major pain in the ass for me as I can't have the car off the road again so had to refit the standard rear springs till I've been in touch with dpm performance not happy.

If any ones go a spare NSF spring going free in the Humber area so I can put it on the standard stuff till I get it sorted I'd be grateful

Well emailed all this off to DPM performance who said they will contact FK for a warranty claim fingers crossed this will be a quick process.

On a side note my out side temp sender is playing up reading way below the actual temp between 5-10 degrees out. Is the sensor the one behind the ns headlight/bumper area?

So the word from FK is return the springs for them to asses then they'll decide if it's warranty or not. Or pay for new springs then if it's covered they will refund me!!! Pretty poor I would say 1 month they've been on the car 1 f&£@ ing month and they're arguing if it's covered. What's the point in a warranty at all might as well not have bothered and bought some second hand ones.

I'm going to look at my credit card and see if I can get a refund via them. My advice stay away from FK products warranty is worth a thing.

I think you mean 7.8mm in first pic dude

But I  get your  point. that is very bad and not acceptable.

The 5mm difference on the length is also not that  normal either, but at least could be taken up with the platform adjustment.

Unfortunately this is normal practice buddy, I had the same when I broke a brand new Weitec spring and had to buy replacement and then claim back through refund.

As the manufacturer is in Germany for FK and KW you basically have to send the part back  to get checked, I can see that DPM would have to do this else they would be out of pocket too.

Also I got 2 new springs for each side as wanted to get them matched but as yours is only 1 month old may not be necessary

hope you get it sorted.

I sure DPM will want to make sure future product is fit for purpose too.

Let's hope so bowders I'm sending both rear springs back tomorrow. It's a PITA though I appreciate it's common but not great customer service on FK side of things.

Damian at DPM has been great though must be a major pain for him middle maning the whole thing.

Let's hope FK are quick about it all as the octy looks like some kind of drag racer at the moment.

Gonna by some new rubber mounts for on top of the springs just to keep everything even, mine are ok just don't wanna have to strip the back down again.

With my FK's i had to knock the rear bottom spring seat with a rubber mallet to get it to sit right. then i tightened the plate up to 55nm.

Got me worried so im going to check mine on sat

Do you mean the FK platform seat or the old original spring seat as that should of been removed before coilover fitting

Which seat was that ? when I refit these springs wanna make sure its all dead right bit sick of rebuilding the same part over again, got better things to do on the car.

Sorry...

I mean the actual FK coilover base plate (The adjustable bit)

When i first installed my coilovers i saw my spring was bending, so i loosened off the bottom nut a tad and knocked the platform with a rubber mallet, and it went really loose! and saw my springs were lined up right i then tightened the nut to 55nm.

from the bottom up:

Bolt + plate > Coilover seat > Spring > Top rubber seat

When you did this was the car jacked up with the suspension hanging free or was it jacked up on the suspension?

  • 3 months later...

I know its been a while but did you get this sorted? Had exactly the same problem but it was the rear beam bushes. Just swapped the orginals for superpros and no more knocking noises or rear end wobble.

Kind of FK replaced the springs under warranty but I got fed up of the ride quality so went back to stock shocks and lowering springs.

TBF once the springs where replaced it was fine.

Fk ak street was what I had on a astra. Rears started knocking. Swapped dampers back to standard and knock went. Then the fronts started to knock. Dampers were at fault again so the kit went back with a full refund. Will never buy fk again.
