What is the fat black wire, left most on the fusebox  (ie. the one nearest to the +ve terminal on the battery).

 

I haven't traced it, but I am going to guess it is the alternator cable?  Is there anything special about it?

 

I am sure you can guess where I am going with this :-(  While doing an oil change this morning, I ran the car to let the oil settle, and did a spot check the it was obviously warm (but not hot, and certainly not melting going on).  However I might as well get on and fix it, so I have the option of buying a dealer cable (or maybe making my own up if someone can tell me the required size & length of cable, plus the size of the crimped on connectors....  Car in question is a 2001 110TDi

mine got real hot and melted my fuse box so replaced all seems good bad resistance causes the cable to get hot

Yeap alternator cable.

It takes a lot of current. Check the nuts are tight and the 120 amp flat fuse is good. If loose nut this will cause resistance.

If tight then you have the start of a bad cable.

You can also make a search on the net for: VW JETTA MK4 Alternator cable and you will find a lot of info on this matter.

 

Its look like VAG manufacture several cars with a low quality alternator cable that have hi resistance to the flow of the current. This resistance make the cable to get hot and this also damage/melt the fuse box on top of the battery.

Haven't checked this on mine yet but knowing my luck this will prob need to go on my list... hence the name lol

after a run in the car pop the bonnet lift the fuse box lid and touch the black cable and nut if its hot change it lol

Which end needs crimping, as I know there's a bolt at one end what's at the other?

I crimped battery end.
