petrol vRS or remap diesel

I bought a diesel vRS in December having test driven the petrol and almost ordered it (2 sleepless nights worrying about fuel costs). The diesel is great and I am happy but the performance keeps popping into my mind, while there is plenty of push up until top end of 3rd the motorway torque is not what I expected (having driven the petrol). Do you think a remap to 205 would quench my thirst or should I be looking at a petrol instead? Also there is a LOT of nu oise from the rear tires but think they are just saw toothed.

I really want to improve the performance from 70mph upwards (although obviously only for private roads!)

is it a cr diesel? i have one and have it mapped and i think it drive much like a petrol now. and dont have any problems what so ever with torque on the motorway.

All depends on your mileage. I've had a remapped diesel and still have the petrol which I've had for 4.5 years from new, also remapped. The petrol is a much better drive IMO.

how do you compaire the standerd petrol performance then to the remapped diesel nobafett? i was behind a vrs the other day that was hard to keep up with but didnt know what engine it was

Thanls. Yes it is the cr diesel 2010 model, did you find the stock 170 a little flat when going 70+ ?

I wouldn't be staying awake at night thinking about the fuel costs of 12-15k a year. Have you actually sat down and worked it out? 

 

I picked up my Stage 2 vRS yesterday, had an awesome 300 mile journey home, you'll soon forget the slight difference in fuel costs once you're having fun with what it sounds like you truly wanted! :D

not really to be honest. i came from a remapped fabia and it wasnt much behind that when putting your foot down. what car are you comming from?

Coming from the standard 1.6 TDI cr on a 11 plate which was obviously a lot slower but I have to say, at 70 or just over the gap between the two does close somewhat. Previously Volvo c70, Audi a4 2.4, mx5, accord coupe, accord 5dr.

I guess the problem now then is going to persuade a dealer to swap for a petrol for very little money (wife will not be happy!)

I went from an 06 tfsi vRS from new which I kept totally standard to a new 58 CR vRS which I remapped after a year or so. I then had a new 11 tsi vRS which I remapped on the second day.

The remapped CR was obviously better than it was standard but still not ultimately as quick or fun to drive as a standard tfsi or tsi vrs. A remapped tsi widens the gap even more.

I have an 06 petrol tfsi with standard power and my mate has an 07 vrs diesel with superchips blue fin the blue fin gives a huge boost in tourqe in the midrange and top end and you still get 40+ mpg when driving spirited my petrol only gives 32 mpg when driving like a grandad if I could of got a diesel for the money I was going to spend I would of with out a second thought. a remap on the diesel engine transforms the car the super chips map seems to pull well from low down up to the red line rather than all top end power  and with the blue fin you can swop back to std power if you want to.I would spend £300-£500 on a decent remap like shark or superchips,and then a small insurance rise , than loose possibly a few thousand pounds on px now the mk3 vrs is out dealers will not give very good px deals on an older vrs, cn tunning is a shark agent in Wokingham just down the M4 from you he posts on the mk1 Octavia forum and will give you a good price he has done work for me and is very good hes modified loads of 1.8t Octavia vrs,s to 300+bhp.

My experience of owning a 170 CR vRS DSG estate was that being an all-round very good car aside it was rather dull;part of the problem was that I dont think the DSG mated very well with the 2.0 TDi but even from a performance perspective it wasnt that impressive.

I think best way to describe it was that it had a very flat power delivery. Of course it was not a slow car it just never felt that quick or induced the "grin factor".

I reckon a remap/tuning box would have sorted it out a treat but it had just turned a year old when I got rid and didnt much fancy dissolving the remainder of its 3 yr warranty.

A well remapped CR is probably slightly quicker overall than a standard TSi but there probably wouldn't be a great deal in it. A mapped TFSi/TSi would wipe the floor with a mapped CR no two ways about it.

I think if you are buying a vRS because you want performance and running costs (because the TFSi/TSi versions real world are quite thirsty) are less of a issue the petrol is the car to have unquestionably. A remapped petrol is a properly quick bit of kit too.

There are tuners afaik which will give you a trial remap: worth trying out if you're not sure. The CR is flat in stock form, a remap should improve that substantially. Having said that, I'm pretty sure based on what you described in your intial post, that if you ever drive a remapped tfsi/tsi you'll buy it :)

I've not driven a std cr let alone remapped, but if the latter is comparable to a standard tsi then it's never going to be that exciting. The difference between std and mapped tsi is surprisingly big.

If your rears are sawtoothed, the new tyres will also be damaged quickly.

Deal with the cause - have a proper 4-wheel alignment done. You will make up for the cost in savings on tyres in no time!
